BA.2 becomes dominant COVID-19 strain in Alberta, update on hospitalizations

There's a new sub-variant in Alberta.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw joined Health Minister Jason Copping Wednesday (Mar. 23) for their weekly briefing on the COVID-19 situation in the province.  

According to Hinshaw, the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron makes up 60 per cent of COVID-19 cases and has become the dominant strain in Alberta.

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP wants your input on policing priorities.

Mounties opened a survey for residents of Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont County, Bruderheim, and Chipman to voice their opinions and provide feedback. 

The survey features sections on overall policing priorities, bylaw enforcement, community engagement, and crime reduction. The RCMP wants to know which areas are most important to you, and what you'd like to see more of from our local law enforcement.

Local talent helps Golden Bears take conference title

The University of Alberta Golden Bears men's hockey team are Western Canadian conference champions after defeating the University of British Columbia 7-0 in the second game of the Canada West Final Saturday (Mar.19), their fourth title in five years.

The Golden Bears finished the season first in Canada West with a 16-4-0 record and 33 points. 

It's also the Bears' 56th Western Canadian conference title since 1934. 

League gives ruling on controversial goal against U18 AAA Rangers

A U18 AAA game over the weekend caused its fair share of controversy.

Game two of the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) finals between the Fort Saskatchewan Straightline Dodge Rangers and the Calgary Buffaloes went into triple overtime. Buffaloes forward Kaiden Witsie took a shot that hit the post and bounced back out, but the referee called it a goal, and Calgary won the game.

The Rangers filed a protest with the league and it was denied. The matter is now considered closed.

Higher bills, inflation impacting local food bank and clientele

Over the last year, some residents and businesses have seen major increases on anything from power bills to stops at the gas station or grocery store.

According to food bank executive director Kassandra Gartner, they have been getting a flurry of new clients who are having a hard time making ends meet.

Jury dismissed in Fort Saskatchewan murder trial, publication ban modified

There have been a couple of new developments in the Damien Starrett murder trial.

The 33-year-old Fort Saskatchewan father is facing second-degree murder charges for killing his one-year-old son Ares and assaulting his five-year-old daughter in 2019.

A publication ban was initially imposed to protect the identity of the two children involved. The ban has been modified so it now only applies to the surviving child.

2022 Influential Women in Canadian Agriculture program
