Fort Black Society to give away books in honour of Black History month
As February winds down, so does Black History Month.
The Fort Black Society hopes to keep the momentum going through a book drive.
From 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday (Feb.28), the group will be at the North Central Co-op Station Square Food Store to hand out free books written by black authors about black historical figures.

A local MLA is reacting to the situation in Ukraine.
Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk says she supports the strongest sanctions possible as well as humanitarian and lethal aid to be sent to Ukraine.
"I am heartbroken for the people of Ukraine and disgusted by the actions of Putin's blood-soaked regime," she said. "Our hearts go out to family and residents of Ukraine."
Police seize drugs, machete during Sherwood Park traffic stop
A traffic stop has resulted in an arrest and several drug seizures.
On Thursday (Feb.24) at 8:43 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP pulled a vehicle over on Highway 16 close to the Victoria Trail exit in Sherwood Park.

Grain Markets show volatility with Russia's war on the Ukraine

Canada closes airspace to all Russian aircraft
The Canadian government says that Canada's airspace is now closed to all Russian aircraft.
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra made the announcement on Sunday morning.
In a tweet, Alghabra says "Effective immediately, Canada’s airspace is closed to all Russian aircraft operators."

Update: Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash on Highway 28
Morinville RCMP were on the scene of what they say was a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 28, one kilometre north of Anthony Henday Drive.
Traffic on Highway 28 was reduced to a single lane in each direction Saturday morning (Feb. 26), however, police have now cleared the scene.
RCMP are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash, which took place in the early morning hours.
RCMP say Sherwood Park man breaks house arrest, caught with drugs and ammo
A man is facing charges after he was arrested by the Strathcona County RCMP.
On Feb. 22, police tried to stop a vehicle after a traffic violation.
Mounties say when Kelly Dawson didn't stop, they followed him to a gas station and arrested him.
"Police searched the vehicle and seized drug paraphernalia, ammunition and what is believed to be 12.3 grams of heroin," the Strathcona County RCMP said in a release.
Russian liquor products being pulled from Alberta shelves
Effective immediately, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) is not accepting new stock of Russian-made liquor products and will not sell any current stock to retailers.
Alberta’s government has directed AGLC to take these immediate steps as a sign of condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Alberta stands in solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine and we will support those fighting against tyranny any way we can,” said premier Jason Kenney.
