Government of Canada invests over $960,000 in Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre
On Monday, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of over $960,000 for the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) to expand existing markets and to develop new markets for Canadian barley and barley products.
Applications now being accepted for Youth Employment and Skills Program
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau has announced an investment of up to $3.7 million to enhance the Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) and support approximately 300 jobs for youth in the agriculture sector.
The YESP aims to support agri-food employers and provide young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 with job experience in agriculture that could lead to a career working in the sector.
Union votes in favour of strike action at CP Rail
Teamsters union members who work for CP Rail have voted in favour of strike action.
The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), says there were 3,062 ballots sent out to the membership, with 96.7% voting in favour of strike action if necessary.
The union says it will continue to participate in the mediation process with planned dates of March 11 to March 16th.
Elections chief eyes ways to act on hate groups
Canada's elections chief is set to take action to stop hate groups from getting tax breaks and lists of voters' names and addresses by registering as political parties.
Chief electoral officer Stéphane Perrault has told MPs he is preparing to suggest safeguards to make it harder for extremists to gain access to benefits, including broadcast time, designed for political parties.

Alberta lifts nearly all public health measures
Alberta is taking a major step towards the end of COVID-19 health measures.
Over the weekend, the Alberta government announced on Mar.1, Step two of easing public health measures would move forward as planned.
“After these past two years, we have finally turned a major corner on COVID-19. All of the data, both here in Alberta and right across the world, says that the worst of Covid is behind us,” said Premier Jason Kenney.
To mask or not to mask...
Today marks the beginning of step two in the province’s reopening plan.
That means that you are no longer required to wear a mask in most places except for public transit, hospitals, continuing care facilities, or if you live in Edmonton.
As with everything pertaining to the pandemic, people have been dealing with a bombardment of changing information for the last 2 ½ years as the COVID-19 virus would morph and change. The fluidity of the pandemic, spiced with politics and human nature has created some very divided views. Not least of which, the great mask debate.
Fort Saskatchewan U15 AAA Rangers play Ukrainian national anthem before game
The Fort Saskatchewan U15 AAA Rangers took a moment to pay tribute to Ukraine.
They played the Ukrainian national anthem before their game on Sunday (Feb.27) and allowed players to hold the Ukrainian flag on the blue line. According to Tyson Munro, U15 head coach, they were inspired by a local Ukrainian family and players of Ukrainian descent in light of the current situation in the country.
Hog Market Update
Forward hog contract prices have been experiencing volatility.
Tyler Fulton is director of risk management with Hams Marketing Services.
"Forward markets have seen similar volatility as what a lot of other markets have been experiencing," he said. "The influence of the invasion in Ukraine from Russia has really kind of thrown a lot of market factors up in the air and there's just a ton of uncertainty associated with trade flows. Less so related to meat protein, but more so related to feed grains."
Fulton commented on the U.S. cash markets.
Key funding for Alberta's agriculture sector
For the first time in ten years, Alberta is looking at a balanced budget for the year ahead.
The Province is forecasting a $500 million dollar surplus for 2022 the increase in revenues mainly due to the increase in oil prices.
Agriculture Minister Nate Horner says as part of Alberta's Recovery Plan they are working to attract $1.4 billion in investment, creating more than 2000 jobs in emerging sectors like hemp, agtech and value-added processing by 2023-24.
