Families could save money with increase to student transportation funding

An increase in student transportation funding across the province could help families save money.  

The province has announced that school authorities across Alberta will be receiving an additional $414 million to help support school transportation. 

That money will be provided over the course of three years starting with $93.5 million in 2023-24, $160 million in 2024-25, and $160 million in 2025-26. 

RCMP charge three locals in suspected break-and-enter

The RCMP has arrested and charged three people who were allegedly involved in a St. Albert break-and-enter. 

Last Thursday (Mar. 9), police responded to complaints of a break-and-enter at a St. Albert storage facility. Police say they arrived and located two individuals before placing them under arrest.

According to RCMP, a third person was located with the help of police dogs and subsequently arrested. 

McCain announces Alberta expansion

McCain Foods is making a $600 million investment in its operation at Coaldale.

The expansion will create two new state-of-the-art production lines and will double the size of its facility and output creating 260 new jobs. 

Max Koeune, President & Chief Executive Officer says the expansion in Alberta marks the largest global investment in the company's 65-year history.

Slaughter cow prices increase across the Prairies

Total cattle marketings in Manitoba for March 3rd to the 9th show 11,018 head of cattle moved through the province's four main auction marts.

Feeder steer prices ranged from an average of $335.38 cwt for the 401 to 500 pound weight category to $220.94 for the 901+ category.

Feeder heifer prices ranged from an average of $270.94 cwt for the 401 to 500 pound weight category to $187.13 for the 901+ category.

D1-D2 cows in Manitoba increased $8.64 to average at $115.36 cwt, D3 slaughter cows increased $7.70 for an average of $98.00 cwt.

Snow plane steals the show at Winterfest

At Winterfest's vintage snowmobile show last month, one entry stood out among the crowd: a snow plane.

A snow plane looks like a mix between a crop duster airplane and a vintage snowmobile, and it stole the show with its unique presentation.

The snow plane, a 1963 Trail-A-Sled, is owned by Jerry Kallal, who has had a passion for vintage snowmobiles since he was a kid.

"It was 1965, [my dad] was going out, and his friends came from Camrose," said Kallal. "One guy had a '65 snow cruiser, and the other got a '65 skidoo, and I got my first ride on a snow machine."

Fort Saskatchewan actor stars in new TV show

A local actor is featured in a new cartoon series from the Property Brothers.

Meadow Kingfisher is a 12-year-old girl from Fort Saskatchewan who plays Mel in Builder Brothers Dream Factory, a preschool cartoon created by Drew and Jonathan Scott.

Kingfisher started off her entertainment career in dance before transitioning into acting.

"I just got into acting two years ago," Kingfisher said. "All the dance competitions got cancelled, then my mom saw something on Instagram looking for Indigenous creators."

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP charge man for allegedly stealing vehicle

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP has arrested an Edmonton man for allegedly stealing a vehicle and forging documents. 

On March 8, police say they observed a vehicle leave a known residence in downtown Fort Saskatchewan. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and RCMP officers reported that they saw evidence that the vehicle's VIN numbers had been tampered with. 

The RCMP says that further investigation into the matter revealed that the vehicle had been stolen out of Edmonton and then fraudulently registered in the suspect's name.

Movie featuring Sherwood Park actor wins an Oscar

A Sherwood Park actor played a part in a movie that won an Oscar over the weekend. 

18-year-old Kate Hallett starred as 'Autje' in 2022's Women Talking directed by Sarah Polley, who was awarded the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay on Sunday (Mar. 12) night. 

"I am just thrilled that this a recognition that our whole film is getting," said Polley. "This feels like it's for this amazing collective group of people who brought a lot of their lived experience to this film."
