RCMP give update on Ardrossan incident over the weekend

The RCMP has given an update on what happened in Ardrossan on Sunday (Mar. 12) morning. 

Just after 8 a.m. that morning the RCMP sent out a release about a heavy police presence and for people to avoid the area while police responded to an incident. 

About an hour later, an update was released saying the incident had been resolved. 

Corporal Troy Savinkoff says police were responding to reports of a suspected armed break-and-enter at a residence. 

FCC releases 2022 Farmland Values Report

Farm Credit Canada's Farmland Values Report shows the average national value of cultivated farmland increased by 12.8 per cent in 2022. 

Farmland values saw the highest increase since 2014 and follow gains of 8.3 per cent in 2021, and 5.4 per cent in 2020.

FCC's chief economist J.P. Gervais says it's all about supply and demand as higher farm revenues are driving the demand for farmland.

Stats show that receipts of grains, oilseeds and pulses increased 18.3 per cent in 2022, and are projected to grow 9.4 per cent in 2023.

Highway 15 pedestrian bridge nearing completion

The pedestrian bridge under the new Highway 15 bridge is expected to be completed soon. 

The traffic side of the bridge was finished back in October, while work on the pedestrian bridge underneath continued until cold weather and snow delayed construction. 

At the moment, Alberta Transportation says there is only minor work left to do. 

"Some minor items on the [pedestrian] bridge will be completed by the end of July 2023," said Ashfaq Khan with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors. 

Strathcona County robotics team headed to the world stage

A Strathcona County robotics team is ready to show off their work to the world. 

The Cyber Eagle Silver senior robotics team received the Inspire Award at the First Tech Challenge (FTC) Alberta provincial championships a few weeks ago. 

The win qualified the team for next month's world championship in Houston, Texas. 

Nate Stork, the lead builder on the team, says it's been a moment they have been working toward all year. 

RCMP gifts musical ride horse to King Charles ahead of upcoming coronation

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they will be gifting King Charles with a new horse, Noble, ahead of the monarch's upcoming coronation in May.

The RCMP says the King will be presented with the horse, which is also being given in recognition of the federal service's 150th anniversary, at a ceremony.

It says the King personally requested a horse from the musical ride to eventually be his new charger when his current steed, George, retires.

The musical ride is a troop of police horse riders who perform intricate formations and drills set to music.

Update: Heavy police presence cleared in Ardrossan

There were a large number of police officers in Ardrossan this morning.

In a release just after 8 a.m., the Strathcona County RCMP said they were responding to an incident and were asking residents to stay in their homes.

“Please refrain from posting photos of officers on social media until the incident is over,” the RCMP stated.

At 9:19, police issued an update saying the area was clear and the matter was resolved.

RCMP provided an update on Monday (Mar. 13) that said police were responding to reports of a suspected armed break-and-enter at a residence. 

Visibility, traffic safety among top 2023 priorities for Fort Saskatchewan RCMP

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP now have a better understanding of what the community expects from them for the rest of the year. 

Inspector Barry LaRocque was with other members of the police to take part in a town hall with Fort Saskatchewan residents on Wednesday (Mar. 8) night. 

"The intent of [town hall] was to have a dialogue with the citizens of Fort Saskatchewan as to what they believe the priorities should be for the RCMP to work on in the next year," said LaRocque. 

"We had 44 people attend the session." 

Redwater RCMP catch alleged car thief

Redwater RCMP has charged a man with breaking and entering after catching him in the middle of stealing a car.

Last month, police received a call from a concerned resident who said they saw someone trying to steal their neighbour's car in Thorhild.

When officers arrived, they say the suspect, 23-year-old Bradley Ingebrigsten, was behind the driver's seat of the car. He was placed under arrest.

After searching Ingebrigsten, police allegedly found a retractable baton, several key rings with car keys, a bag of break-in tools, a wallet, and a garage door opener.

Sherwood Park students take impaired driving obstacle course

Students at Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School (ABJ) got a chance to understand the effects of impaired driving. 

Teaming up with Citizens on Patrol, the school organized an impaired driving simulator for students last Wednesday (Mar. 8). 

ABJ set up pylons, stop signs, and stuffed animals in their gym to create an obstacle course. The students were then asked to safely navigate the course in a pedal kart while wearing vision-altering goggles to mimic what it would be like to be driving under the influence of alcohol. 

Ottawa commits to 'targeted' bail reforms that would address repeat violent offenders

Justice Minister David Lametti says the federal government will move forward quickly on "targeted reforms" to the Criminal Code that would update Canada's bail system.

Lametti says the reforms will address challenges posed by repeat violent offenders and those facing firearms and other weapons charges. 

He made the commitment this afternoon following what he called a good and productive meeting with his provincial and territorial counterparts.
