Look for fireworks at this year's WCBL All-Star game this Saturday

The 2025 WCBL All-Star game, presented by Fortis Alberta, is set for this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Seaman Stadium.

There might be fireworks between the West and East All-Star teams, but there literally will be fireworks following the game.

Gates open early at 3:30 p.m. so fans can enjoy multitudes of activities.

The Homerun Derby is always a fan favourite.

There's even a chance for one lucky fan to win $10,000 courtesy of Pete the Plumber, a long-time sponsor of the Okotoks Dawgs.

Baseball recap: Royals split; 18UAAA Red Sox capture a win

It was a busy baseball night on Tuesday with the East Central 18UAAA Red Sox and the Marysburg Royals both taking to the road.  

The Red Sox were in Swift Current facing down the Z7 Sun Devils where they pulled back into the win column.  

Dayne Schommer opened on the mound for the Red Sox keeping the hit count low for the Sun Devils.  

Blue Jays select Dawgs Academy standout in MLB draft

An Okotoks Dawgs Academy infielder has been selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the MLB Draft.

Eighteen-year-old Tim Piasentin was chosen 143rd overall and was the Jays' second Canadian pick.

The Foothills Composite High School graduate showcased his skills at the Blue Jays Futures Academy Showcase in September and more recently during spring training in Arizona.

Piasentin is originally from Coquitlam, B.C., and is committed to the University of Miami.

TRADE | Warriors acquire Andresen from Hurricanes

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – The Moose Jaw Warriors have acquired 2007-born forward, Kash Andresen, from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a 2nd round pick at the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft.

“Adding Andresen to our group will provide us with a top 9 centreman who brings size and grit along with some secondary scoring,” said General Manager Jason Ripplinger. “Kash has been in the league for two years and will bring playoff experience along with solid leadership qualities.”

The Weyburn Beavers came into Moose Jaw and beat the Miller Express 5-4 in an extra inning last night. Noah Brooks went two for four with two RBI for the winners. Eduardo Saenz and Andy Rivas both hit home runs in a losing cause. Moose Jaw will host the Medicine Hat Mavericks tonight.

In other Western Canadian Baseball League action last night, Brooks outscored Regina 10-9 while the east division leading Saskatoon Berries beat Okotoks 11-8. The Berries are 32 and 5 on the season.

Cochrane’s Bauer inks new deal with Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed Cochrane defenceman Tyrel Bauer to a one-year, two-way contract worth US$775,000 at the NHL level.

Bauer, 23, recorded two assists and 105 penalty minutes over 59 games last season with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

If reassigned to the AHL team, he's guaranteed $125,000.

Bauer was honoured as Manitoba’s IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year for 2024–25, recognizing his outstanding community contributions. He also earned the Moose’s EPRA Julian Klymkiw Community Service Award and the Richard Bue Ultimate Teammate Award.

Swift Current to showcase stock cars, Legend Cars, & kids' demo derby

An adrenaline-packed weekend of dirt racing is right around the corner, featuring Alberta's Legend Cars, the modifieds, minis, hobbies, street stocks, and a duo of thrilling kids' events.

The Swift Current Stock Car Racing Association is setting up for the races, kicking off at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Swift Current Motor Speedway.
Terry Fehr, vice president of the Swift Current Stock Car Racing Association, shared that everyone is welcome and admission is $15 for adults or $5 for children.

Cartwright Twins still the team to beat in the Border Baseball League

It's been an incredible run for the Cartwright Twins the last few seasons in the Border Baseball League, and player/manager Drew Haight believes the group is poised to do it again.

With playoffs in full swing, Haight says this is the time of year the team really looks forward to. "We love it," he says with a laugh. "Every year, you play the regular season, and those games are fun, but you're always working toward the playoffs. This time of year, we tend to try and bring out 'A' game every night and it's the time you want to be playing."
