Jamie Laboucane takes the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship

High River's Jason Glass is 'this close' to winning a chuckwagon finals this season.

He came in second, for the second consecutive weekend, at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship.

Glass just qualified for the final four on a slow track on Saturday night but just missed out on the $23,500 payday.

Jamie Laboucane took the title, buckle and cheque.

Jordie Fike from the Blackie area also had a good weekend finishing in 16th on Sunday and 17th overall allowing him to get his full-time permit for the rest of the season.

Beavers wrap up trip to Medicine Hat

The Weyburn Beavers dropped both games of a weekend road series against the Medicine Hat Mavericks, who continue to dominate the WCBL’s West Division. With a 6-5 extra-inning loss on Saturday and an 11-5 defeat on Sunday, the Beavers fell to 2-7 on the season, while the Mavericks improved their league-best record to 9-2. 

Saturday’s game saw the Beavers push the Mavericks to the limit, but a 10th-inning run sealed a 6-5 walk-off win for Medicine Hat.

After beating them 7-2 Saturday night the Moose Jaw Miller Express suffered a 10-2 loss to the visiting Brooks Bombers yesterday at Ross Wells Park.

Pitcher Skylar Sievert was the difference, working 6 scoreless innings while giving up just 3 hits and striking out 4.

The Millers, now 4 and 5, will play the Beavers in Weyburn tomorrow night.

In other Western Canadian Baseball League action yesterday, Regina Red Sox beat Fort McMurray 7-4, Medicine Hat topped Weyburn 11-5 and the Swift Current 57's won their first game of the season, 7-6 over Saskatoon.

MacGregor golfer captures first Grey Owl title at Clear Lake

A familiar face at the Grey Owl men’s golf tournament is finally a champion.

Darcy Howarth, a 50-year-old from MacGregor, went wire-to-wire over the weekend to win the 63rd annual tournament at Clear Lake Golf Course.

Playing through steady rain and chilly conditions, Howarth posted rounds of 69 and 76 for a 145 total, good enough to hold off two-time champion Jared Jacobson of Brandon by three strokes.

Howarth entered Sunday’s final round with a one-shot lead over St. Charles’ Curtis Markusson.

Wolverines split two games on weekend

A split this weekend for the Swift Current Wolverines in the junior Prairie Gold Lacrosse League.

Brady Simpson and Isaac Froese each scored 4 times as the Wolverines blew Weyburn out 22-7 on Saturday.

Shane Cornelson and Carter Lamotte each had hat tricks.

Simpson and Cornelson each had hat tricks on Sunday in a 14-10 loss to Regina.

Swift Current hosts Regina on Friday.

57's pick up first win of the summer

Gus Koehn hit a two-run single in the bottom of the 8th inning as the Swift Current 57's earned their first win of the WCBL season, 7-6 over Saskatoon.

Silas Hilton went 2 for 4 for Swift Current with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs.

Shunta Furuya got the win in relief for the 57's, while Adam Korte earned the save.

Swift Current native Ethan Murdoch went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored for Saskatoon in a losing cause.

The 57's are off today and host Regina tomorrow.
