MacMillan heads to Legion Nationals after breakout track season

It's been a breakout season for emerging distance track athlete Eddie MacMillan.

Hot off medal performances at the Athletics Alberta Age Class Provincial Track and Field Championships and the Western Canadian Challenge, he's preparing for his first appearance at the Legion U16 National Track Championships, which kick off Friday in Calgary.

The 15-year-old pulled off a rare and impressive “distance trifecta” at the provincials, winning gold in the 800m, 1200m and 2,000m events in the U16 age class.

Sask Selects international tournaments announced

The Sask Selects Football program concluded its road trip of ID camps last month, and now the attention turns to the start of the 2025 - 2026 season. The program will have three international tournaments to look forward to this season.

The first one will be held from November 26 to 29 in Las Vegas, NV, for the 24th International Pigskin Tournament. Then the Selects will host numerous teams from around the world for their Battle on the Prairies Tournament, January 8 to 11.

Weyburn's Schenher shines at U18 Women's National Football Championship

Most teenage girls would spend their summer months hanging out with friends, socializing or maybe playing one sport or a hobby. Very few would be spending their time travelling all over Canada playing a variety of sports; however, Weyburn’s Ella Schenher is far from ordinary. Schenher wrapped up the end of July in Calgary for her third and final year of U18 Women’s National Football Championship, quarterbacking the Saskatchewan team.

Bates grateful for Flyers experience, ready for next coaching challenge

After many special years in Winkler, both as a player and a coach, Coltyn Bates announced he'll be heading across the pond, and taking a job as an assistant coach for a professional team, Coventry Blaze in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).

"It hasn't really settled in yet," he says about being referred to as a former coach of the Flyers. "I'm going to be an assistant coach, and I figured it would be a good stepping stone for a young coaching career. My first pro gig."

From St. Malo to Dauphin, Trudeau heading to MJHL's Kings

After spending a few special years in St. Malo, Patrick Trudeau has accepted an assistant coach position with the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. 

"It's a big step forward," Trudeau says with a smile. "In terms of quality of play, and I'll also have to move up to the town of Dauphin, which I'm excited to join the community. I'm very excited and just counting down the days."

Local motocross results from Saskatoon

Several southwest Saskatchewan products took part on motocross events in Saskatoon on August 3rd.

Eden Kroeker took top spot in the GP Beginner class, while Adairia Dickie placed 3rd in Ladies B Class.

13U AAA 57's have strong run at provincials

The Swift Current 13U AAA 57's had a strong run at provincials.

They made it all the way through to the semifinal despite some very close games. 

Swift Current beat the Saskatoon Bulls 9-8, Regina Wolfpack 14-9, and the Weyburn Beavers 11-10 to go undefeated through the round robin.

They then lost 5-3 to Yorkton in semifinal action.

In 15U AAA Tier 2 provincials, Swift Current lost 13-4 to East Central, beat the Southwest Twins 11-10, and lost 10-4 to the Regina Wolfpack before being eliminated. 

Saskatoon Berries look to carry regular season success into playoffs

There has been no sophomore jinx with the Saskatoon Berries in the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2025. 

This past weekend, the Berries completed the regular season establishing a new record for regular season, finishing off with a 46-9 record. Saskatoon finished 12 games ahead of Medicine Hat to claim the Eastern Division. 

A trio of local players were on the Berries roster this past season. 

Fort McMurray Giants fined after league denies protested games

The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) has denied the Fort McMurray Giants' protest of two games against the Okotoks Dawgs in late July.

On July 28, the Dawgs were set to host the Giants for a doubleheader that had already been postponed from July 22.

Just before the first game was set to begin, the Giants walked off the field, declaring the conditions unsafe due to excessive rainfall in the days leading up to the game.
