Sports Update - Thursday, October 17th

Mason Leite scored at 2:25 of overtime to lift the defending Zone 4 High School Hockey League champion Morden Thunder past Garden Valley 2-1. Ryan Thiessen also scored for the Thunder. Regan Froese replied for the Zodiacs. The Miller Aces game in Morris against the Mavericks was postponed.


The Winkler Flyers put their five-game win streak on the line tonight when they meet the Virden Oil Capitals at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The defending Turnbull Cup champions wrapped up their four-game homestand with a 9-0 victory over the Selkirk Steelers on Tuesday. 

Canada clinches first in Group A at World Mixed Curling

Team Canada, skipped by Shaun Meachem of the Swift Current Curling Club, picked up two more wins at the World Mixed Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland on Wednesday.

Meachem, Kelly Schafer and Chris and Teejay Haichert opened the day with a 10-2 victory over Czechia, scoring eight unanswered points over the last three ends. Team Canada then kept their unbeaten run alive with a 15-1 win over the Philippines in the evening draw.

Impact mark first win as league starts second season

It took a lot longer than they hoped, but the Southwest CMX Impact finally got to celebrate a win on the weekend. 

"It was an exciting game and exciting weekend," said Impact GM/Head Coach Wade Lacher. "It was a good way to start the year."

After going 0-17 in their inaugural season, a Mya Brown goal in overtime lifted the Impact to a Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League victory over Lumsden on Saturday. There were some new faces joining the lineup right up until puck drop.

Red Wings light up the net in Nipawin

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had a rocky start to the 2024-25 season. Since those four games, though, the Red Wings have been on a tear, and they continued their winning streak Wednesday night in Nipawin. Thanks in part to a hat trick from Lucas Schmid, Weyburn extended the streak to five games with a 9-1 win over the Hawks. 

"We kind of had a feeling going into the game; our energy was pretty good," Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes said after the game. "(The) boys were excited to get back at it here. I thought our habits were pretty good throughout the night."

No elevator? No problem! Airdrie teens deliver Thanksgiving cheer

A group of hockey players from Airdrie’s U16 AA team transformed an ordinary Thanksgiving into an extraordinary experience for residents at the senior independent living centre at Cedarwood Station. The heartwarming visit from 15 of the young men came spontaneously after it became known that the building’s elevator had malfunctioned a few days prior.

Sarah Barton, a hockey mom, had been chatting with another parent, Janaya Stevenson, who works at Cedarwood Station, on Sunday during the team's hockey game when the topic came up. 

Cobras seeking to stop Chargers in bronze medal game

The Cochrane Cobras girls soccer team is in the hunt for a bronze medal in RVS divisional play.

Last night, the Cobras fell to the powerhouse Springbank Phoenix, 6-2, in semifinal action at Springbank's Field for All Seasons.

They face the Bert Church Chargers in the bronze medal game on Oct. 19 at Airdrie's Monklands Fields.

The George McDougall Mustangs beat the Bert Church Chargers 1-0 in other semifinal action to advance to the divisional championship game.

The Phoenix head into the gold medal game with a perfect 6-0 record.
