Wranglers left winger takes home dual sportsmanship honours
A Sylvan Lake Wrangler has won two awards for his sportsmanship this season.
Justin Gyori earned both his team’s Most Sportsmanlike Player award and the HJHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Award.
According to the Wranglers, the honour recognizes a player who demonstrates character, integrity and sportsmanship without compromising skill or performance.
Gyori has been an offensive leader over the past two seasons, topping the Wranglers in scoring during that time.
Red Deer County launches Fire Cadet Program for youth
Red Deer County is launching a Fire Cadet Program this fall, offering young people a structured pathway into fire and emergency services.
The program, open to youth ages 16 to 18, will run weekly from October to May in alignment with the school year. Orientation is set for Oct. 8, and applications are open until Sept. 12.

Feats of strength and community spirit at 3rd annual Royal Iron Strength Classic
The 3rd Annual Royal Iron Strength Classic Strongman/Strongwoman Competition is set to take place this Sunday, (September 7) at Red Deer Bottling Co. Ltd., with doors opening at 10:30 a.m.
The strongman and strongwoman competition, hosted by Royal Iron Strength owner Nick Ris, promises feats of power, community spirit, and support for a good cause.
This year’s charity partner is The Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program, timed perfectly with the back-to-school season.
Air quality warning in parts of Central Alberta
Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning for parts of Central Alberta due to smoke causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.
Officials say conditions can change quickly, with air quality and visibility fluctuating over short distances and varying hour by hour.
Those most at risk include people over 65, pregnant people, infants and children, people with chronic health conditions, and those who work outdoors. Officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and seeking medical attention if symptoms develop.

An aggressive control program had made it the largest inhabited area in the world that is free of true rats.
There is no resident population of rats, and the rodents are not allowed to establish themselves.

Jack, born and raised in Lacombe County was part of a strong farming family and was around horses and cows his whole life, he reflects on being about 11 or 12 years old when he got his first horse.

Municipal Election Day is coming October 20.

Name announced for Sylvan Lake Rock Snake
After much anticipation, the Sylvan Lake Rock Snake officially has a name.
Following a community vote of five finalists, the rock snake at the Health and Wellness Healing Hub will go by Sylvia.
Sylvia is more than 150 rocks long and the name was originally submitted by Maddie and her family, who received a snake-themed prize for the winning entry.
Other name finalists included Pebbles, Squiggles, Laker Lenny and Willy Wellness.
Temporary road closure Friday in Ponoka
There will be a temporary road closure on 51 Avenue between 50 Street and 51 Street on Friday, September 5 starting at 3 p.m. for the Town’s annual Fall Fest celebration.
The parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue will be closed starting at 8 a.m. on September 5 for set up and all cars should be removed by this time.
The temporary road closure will remain in place until 11 p.m.
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in the downtown area, observe road signs and watch for pedestrians.
