Free fishing weekend in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan residents are able to enjoy the popular pastime of fishing for free this Family Day long weekend.

This applies only to provincial bodies of water outside of National parks. The following is via the Government of Saskatchewan:

  • Angling limits and all other sport fishing laws remain in effect.
  • The free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks.
  • Anyone planning to take fish out of the province must buy a license.

In Saskatchewan, nearly 20 per cent of all angling occurs during the winter months.

Rock and roll part of Country Thunder 2024 lineup

The highly anticipated lineup for Saskatchewan's biggest party of the summer is officially out and features some classic and new country acts plus a wildcard headliner.

Country Thunder Saskatchewan 2024 headliners have Dallas Smith slated for Friday, Nickelback, which is a surprise for many but, still a crowd pleaser return to Craven for the first time since 2002 will take the stage Saturday night and Luke Combs closes out the festival Sunday.

Highway Hotline busy again this past year

Frequent storms, inclement weather and construction had a larger than usual audience visit the Highway Hotline looking to get the latest updates. 

The new look Highway Hotline received 10.6 million visits last year which is above the average from past years. While still a large number, it didn't top the record from the previous year which saw 13 million people visit the site. 

Community event in Alsask had 23 teams

Despite the extreme heat over the long weekend, an annual event was held in the community of Alsask. It was organized by Emily Longmire and Katina Musat. The event has taken place for the past few years, with a new theme each time.

"This year was called anything but a human. Myself and my boyfriend were a cupcake and a muffin." said Longmire. "We had mermaids, they won the best costume. We had everything from oreos to highlighters out there. It was a lot of fun"
