Beef industry Conference an opportunity for Canadian producers

The beef industry will be hosting a major get-together next week with the Canadian Beef Industry Conference getting underway in Saskatoon.

It'll be the first time for the city to host the conference, which includes meetings and presentations by numerous important figures in Canada's beef industry.

Scott Wright, a co-host of the Canadian Beef Industry Conference for 2024, says it's a great opportunity for the city and the province.

Update: Highway 2 reopened near Nanton after fatal collision

Nanton RCMP and emergency personnel were busy this morning on the scene of a serious collision just north of the town.

The collision happened on Highway 2 approximately at 5:00 a.m. about halfway between Cayley and Nanton.

EMS has confirmed that it was a single-vehicle collision with one person being declared deceased.

The RCMP closed the southbound lanes for several hours, but they've since been reopened.

More mental health funding is coming to Alberta schools

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States says that healthy students are better learners.

Because of that connection between a student's well-being, including their mental well-being, and their educational outcomes, the Alberta government is extending their Mental Health in Schools Pilot program and investing $6.7 million for in-school mental health supports for upwards of 350,000 students in the 2024-2025 school year.

It's a great time to look to the sky for the Perseid meteor shower

The Perseid meteor shower is in its glory right now.

This past weekend was supposed to be the peak time to look for them however, Dr. Phil Langill with the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory says that's not exactly right.

"These predictions about meteor showers are as always, best guesses. They're based on historical data and that allows us to predict with some confidence when things are going to happen but honestly the peak time, plus or minus a week people will still be able to see some good Perseid meteor action up in the sky."

Eric Hartman excited to start his journey with the Atlanta Braves

Okotoks Daws 18U Black Academy player, Eric Hartman got his name called during the 2024 MLB draft and was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 20th round.

Shortly after getting picked by the Braves, he signed a deal with the organization and now is officially a part of the Braves.

Hartman who is 18 years old and comes from St. Albert, Alberta was also selected to play on Team Canada's Junior National Team.

"It's a dream come true, and I'm super grateful for just the opportunity and everyone who has helped me along the way," Hartman said.

'They crossed the line': Crown in closing arguments for 'Freedom Convoy' organizers

Two prominent "Freedom Convoy" organizers "crossed the line" into criminal activity when they led a massive demonstration to Ottawa in 2022 and refused to leave, the Crown said in its final submissions on their criminal trial Tuesday.

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were among several organizers who brought a huge number of demonstrators and big-rig trucks to Ottawa two years ago to protest pandemic-era public health restrictions and vaccine mandates.

Jasper council told wildfire caused $283 million in lost property value

The town of Jasper says early numbers indicate last month’s wildfires destroyed $283 million worth of property.

The town also reports that while 358 structures were destroyed, mostly businesses and homes, the total number of housing units lost is about 800.

The figures were delivered to councillors by chief administrative officer Bill Given at a virtual meeting Tuesday.

Given said the numbers get even more daunting as the town moves forward with rebuilding because the lost structures equate to a $2.2-million loss in annual property tax revenue.

Dawgs swarm Gulls in game three to move onto the WCBL finals

The Okotoks Dawgs swarmed the Sylvan Lake Gulls in the fourth inning with eight runs and took game three 10-4 on Tuesday night to move onto the WCBL finals.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express moved on to the finals after beating the Saskatoon Berries 5-3 and will now face the Dawgs in the finals which start on Thursday. Okotoks now find themselves two wins away from completing the three-peat.

Not only did the Dawgs come back from being down 0-1 in the series, but they also came back in the game itself after trailing the Gulls 2-0.

Doughnut sales to support Jasper wildfire relief

Tim Hortons locations across Alberta are helping raise funds for those affected by the wildfires in Jasper.

This week, they'll be selling Alberta Cares Donuts, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal.

Kevin Generoux, who owns both Tim Hortons locations with his wife Kim Generoux, says that giving back is just what they do.
