Gallery: Art lovers invited to explore Okotoks' Nooks and Crannies

The 2024 Nooks and Crannies Festival returns to Okotoks this weekend.

It's a month-long annual outdoor art festival featuring displays made entirely of recycled materials.

This year's festival will run from July 20 to August 24 and will feature 17 installments, and those who seek all of them out could walk away with a prize.

The Town has created a scavenger hunt map, and is inviting Okotokians to jot down the symbol at each of the art installations for a chance to win.

Canadian flights, hospitals, border disrupted during global technology outage

A global technology outage had grounded flights, disrupted hospitals and backed up border crossings in Canada on Friday, as reported issues persisted hours after the issues with Microsoft services were said to be getting fixed.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.  The issue affected Microsoft 365 apps and services, and escalating disruptions continued after the technology company said it was gradually fixing it.

The fiddler in the room: High River man celebrates 100 years of life and music 

From a rural farm in Saskatchewan to the dance halls near High River, the past 100 years have been full of adventure and music for Reg Evans. 

Evans celebrated his 100th birthday on July 18th with a special gathering at the Medicine Tree Manor in High River, and another at the High River Hospital. Another celebration is planned for this coming Saturday at the local Legion. 

Dawgs halt the Express in their tracks

Okotoks and the Moose Jaw Miller Express met for the first time this season with the Dawgs coming out on top 4-3 at Seaman Stadium tonight.

Quinn Tocheniuk started on the mound for the Dawgs pitching in two full innings and producing three K's. All-Star Garrett Maloney came in relief in the third inning and pitched four and two-thirds innings striking out four Miller Express batters. Cade Herrmann, Blake Crippin, Zane Morrison, and Ashton Luera also appeared on the mound.

One person hospitalized after fire on Maple Street

One man was rescued from a home and is in hospital after a fire on Maple Street in Okotoks. 

It happened at around 2:30 Thursday afternoon as smoke was seen coming from a home on the street.

One person inside the house was rescued. 

Alberta EMS says that paramedics took that person to hospital in a non-life-threatening condition. 

All major grocers agree to sign on to Canada's Grocery Sector Code of Conduct

The announcement was released during the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers annual conference.

In a statement they note that : "After years of work and widespread industry participation, all major retailers have agreed to join the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct. This includes Loblaw, Sobeys, and Metro, and most recently, Walmart and Costco. "

'Anything is possible': Gen. Jennie Carignan takes over command of Armed Forces

Gen. Jennie Carignan was a little emotional on Thursday as she spoke to reporters about what it means to take over command of the Canadian Armed Forces. 

It's an honour that felt like the natural next step in her career, she said, something she's worked toward for the last 38 years. It also means, for other women or marginalized people, that "it's possible, folks — the door is open."

"This is actually what my parents used to tell me: 'Anything is possible. You can do anything,'" she said. 

Locally-shot TV series receives 15 Emmy nods

A show that was partially shot in High River has been nominated for 15 Emmy Awards.

As with seasons one through three, the fifth season of Fargo was shot in southern Alberta, including in High River, Didsbury, and Beiseker.

The anthology series, like the 1996 film it's based on, is set primarily in Minnesota, though the timeframe varies from season to season.

It's garnered 52 Emmy nominations since its premiere in 2014, and has won six. Below is a list of nominees for the 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony
