Partial lunar eclipse and harvest supermoon on display tonight

Stargazers are in for another beautiful display following Monday night's Aurora Borealis.

Tuesday (Sept. 17) evening will see a partial lunar eclipse coinciding with a harvest supermoon.

Jeroen Stil, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary, explains the nature of the eclipse.

"If people have seen a total eclipse, where the moon glows blood red, that's not quite what we'll get. We'll get only part of the moon turning dark, just 8.4 per cent of the surface."

Bird flu outbreaks has CFIA advising against Canadian participation in US beef shows

With bird flu outbreaks popping up more and more in the United States, officials are asking Canadian producers to not bring their own cattle over in case of contamination.

That comes as multiple producers will be unable to attend cattle shows below the border due to the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

In a release from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), they advised against " all Canadian cattle travelling to and participating in agricultural exhibitions in the U.S. at this time."

Canada’s inflation rate hits 2% target, lowest level in more than three years

Inflation finally hit the Bank of Canada's two per cent target in August after a tumultuous battle with skyrocketing price growth, raising the odds of larger interest rate cuts in the coming months.

Canada's annual inflation rate fell from 2.5 per cent in July to reach the lowest level since February 2021.

The slowdown can be attributed in part to lower gasoline prices, Statistics Canada said Tuesday in its consumer price index report.

Emergency culvert installation causes road closure in Foothills County

An intersection in Foothills County will be closed for work, effective immediately.

Foothills Public Works were notified by Volker Stevin will close down the intersection at 128 St East and HWY 552 so they can do an emergency culvert installation.

The intersection has been closed since noon and will remain closed until 4:30 p.m. on September 18.

338th Ave and 160th St East will be the alternative route while crews are installing the culvert.

The County extends their apologies for any inconvenience this work may cause.

Town of Nanton announces the resignation of town councillor

The Town of Nanton has announced the resignation of one of its town council members.

Councillor Kevin Todd has resigned, due to "increased professional responsibilities and personal commitments," according to a release from the Town.

Todd was elected to Nanton's town council in 2021, and ran as a provincial candidate for the Livingstone-Macleod riding in 2023, first for the United Conservative Party, and then for the Alberta Party.

Thunderstorms could roll through Foothills County

There is a chance that a thunderstorm may hit Foothills County today.

According to Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment & Climate Change Canada, Alysa Pederson, a thunderstorm may move across Southern Alberta today.

"It's not a common thing for September, but it's absolutely possible right into October, November," Pederson explains. "But, yeah, there is a risk of thunderstorms in the Foothills of Alberta today and extending eastwards across southern Alberta towards Medicine Hat as well."

Canadian Foodgrains Bank receives $100 million over four years to combat food insecurity

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank has once again received federal government funding with a grant for $100 million over the next four years.

Split into $25 million per year, that will go towards their programs which help Candian-produced food go to hungry mouths internationally.

Andy Harrington, the executive director of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, says he's happy to be able to help more people over the next four years.

Lotto grand prize on Tuesday will be biggest ever

The Lotto Max jackpot this week will be the highest it's ever been.

On Tuesday, September 17th, the Lotto Max grand prize is $80 million, making it the biggest jackpot in Canadian history.

There will also be 18 Maxmillions prizes up for grabs, making it so there is $98 million for people to win.

Since 2019, the Lotto Max jackpot was capped $70 million, but since the draw on September 10th, 2024, the jackpot prize has been increased to $80 million.

The Maxmillions prizes will begin to be awarded once the jackpot reaches $50 million.
