Terrier defencemen shine at MJHL/SJHL Showcase
Eight Portage Terriers hit the ice yesterday in Winnipeg for the first day of the MJHL/SJHL Showcase. The best players from each league were split into six teams to put their talent on display in front of scouts from the NCAA to the NHL.
The first game of the day saw SJHL 20U Gold defeat MJHL 20U Red 4-1. While no Terriers were able to get on the scoresheet in this one, defenceman Hayden Lacquette and Kian Calder were paired together, and Portage's leading-scorer Ryan Botterill shared the ice with two Waywayseecappo Wolverines, Boone Mathison and Carson Baptiste.
Seven years after serious in-game injury, an update with former Terrier Braden Pettinger
It started as a regular night of hockey for the Portage Terriers and Winnipeg Blues just over seven years ago on November 12th, 2015. But it certainly didn't end that way. Following a routine collision with another player, Terrier player Braden Pettinger crashed into the boards. The end result was a C5 (neck) spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Two goals from Kiesman was all the Dogs needed against Selkirk
The Portage Terriers are back in the win column. The Dogs downed the Selkirk Steelers 2-1 in a very physical outing at Stride Place.
The first period saw a lot of end-to-end play, with the biggest scoring chance coming for Selkirk.
Terrier goaltender Jayden Catellier stretched out to make a save but the puck went wide, hit the end boards, and ended up on the other side of the net. As Catellier was sliding across, a Steeler went to tap the puck in, but he was denied by the side of the net and the skate of the Portage netminder.
Terriers rally but can't get past Pistons
The Portage Terriers are disappointed in their start to Wednesday night's game. The Dogs have now lost three consecutive games as the Steinbach Pistons left Stride Place with a 5-3 victory.
Travis Hensrud and Noah Szabo were able to find the back of the net in the first to give the Pistons a two-goal lead after 20 minutes. Terrier defenceman Matt McLeod says goalie Bailey Monteith did what he could to keep them in the game early.
Terriers hoping to get back on track against Steinbach
Stride Place will be taken over by the two best teams in the MJHL tonight. The Portage Terriers are back on home ice as they welcome the Steinbach Pistons to town for what will be the fifth meeting between these two squads this season.
The Terriers currently lead the season series 3-1 and will only play the Pistons one more time, which will be the last game of the regular season.
Portage has a two-point lead on Steinbach in the standings and has come away with victories over the Pistons in three consecutive meetings.
Crescentview shows immigrant families what being a Portager is all about
École Crescentview School is trying to integrate some of its recently immigrated students into the Portage la Prairie lifestyle.
Principal Tracey Vanstone says their Home & School Association has been coming up with ways to engage families, and last Friday, their focus was on some of those families from different parts of the world.
Terriers looking to tie longest win streak of the season
The Portage Terriers are looking to take sole possession of first place in the MJHL standings tonight. The Dogs are tied with the Steinbach Pistons for the top spot for the first time since November.
Portage currently holds the tiebreaker over the Pistons as they are 3-1 in the season series thus far, and the Dogs also have three extra games to play.
Terriers on a roll - take close one in Winkler
The Portage Terriers grabbed their seventh win in a row Wednesday night beating the Winkler Flyers 4-3. With the win, the Dogs move into a tie with Steinbach for first place, plus they have three games in hand. The Pistons lost to the Winnipeg Blues 4-1.
It was a tight-checking back-and-forth first period. Midway through the frame Terrier forward Mike Stubbs tipped a Kian Calder point shot over the shoulder of Malachi Klassen to open the scoring. Portage hung on to the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Terriers to be represented well at MJHL/SJHL Showcase
The Portage Terriers are sending nine players to the MJHL/SJHL Showcase in Winnipeg at the end of the month.
The event will see the best prospects from the two leagues be split into teams to put their best skate forward in front of scouts from leagues like the WHL, NCAA, USPORTS, and even the NHL.
There will be two U18 squads, one with MJHL players and the other with SJHL players, and four U20 teams, two teams from each league.
