Mounties in Alberta are looking for help from the public after the body of a teen girl was found in an abandoned car close to the U.S. border.

Police say Jordyn (Rylie) Dines was found in the abandoned Toyota Camry on July 4 near Glenwood, 50 kilometres from the border.

The 16-year-old was last seen the day before at the Chinook Centre shopping mall in Calgary.

Police say Dines died under suspicious circumstances, but didn’t elaborate.

Canada’s labour market topped expectations in June amid a surprise surge in hiring.

Statistics Canada said Friday that the unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 6.9 per cent in June as the economy added some 83,000 jobs.

The vast majority of those jobs were part-time, the agency said, with 47,000 positions added in the private sector.

A Reuters poll of economists heading into Friday’s release had expected the jobless rate would rise to 7.1 per cent in June as employment levels held flat.

The Calgary Stampede has now welcomed more than one million guests through its gates, with total attendance reaching 1,069,306 as of Thursday, July 10.

According to figures released Friday morning, 95,165 people attended the park on Thursday.

The Calgary Stampede had Albertans rooting for five of the 10 Saddle Bronc riders as Pool C kicked off Thursday.

The Hay brothers from Wildwood, AB, are always top contenders, having both won the Calgary Stampede before.

Dawson Hay took the top score of 91.50 as brother Logan finished in 3rd with a score of 88.00.

Ben Anderson (Rocky Mountain House, AB) scored an 84.00 on a re-ride as Quinten Taylor (Nanton, AB) scored an 83.50 and Millarville's Layton Green came in 10th with a score of 80.50.

Residents of Abrio Place are enjoying their new outdoor garden.

Melissa Bevan, the lodge manager for Abrio Place, explained that this was a goal for a while, so Abrio Place could feel even more like a home.

"We have a lot of wonderful gardeners, and we wanted to make it their own."

Kim Powell, the lead center coordinator for Abrio Place, explained that residents are outside on the nice days, taking care of their plots and enjoying the weather.

The Airdrie Fire Department has completed its annual fire hydrant testing for the year.

Deputy Chief with the Airdrie Fire Department, Garth Rabel, explained they do this testing starting in the fall in collaboration with the City of Airdrie's water services team.

"We make sure that the water supply, which we will need if we need to go to work in that area, is functioning properly, effectively and efficiently."

He shared that they checked around 700-800 fire hydrants.

Gas prices have jumped up once again in Airdrie, when summer travel is at an all-time high.

Over the past couple of days, Airdronians saw gas prices jump from $125.9 to the $133.9 range while diesel jumped to $141.9

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, discussed why Airdrie is experiencing another surge.

"Oil prices are back up about $3 a barrel compared to a week ago. Oil is now at about $68 or $69 a barrel, and the slight increase in the price of oil is having an impact and pushing gas prices up."

The NDP's leadership race to replace Jagmeet Singh will formally begin in September, with a six-month race to follow according to a rules framework adopted by the party's national council. 

A new leader will be chosen no later than March 29, when the party holds its 2026 convention in Winnipeg.

An entry fee of $100,000 has been set for candidates to show their "organizational and fundraising capacity."

Debates and other leadership events hosted by the party will be streamed online in both official languages, according to the framework. 

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports on Aug. 1 in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on social media Thursday night, evidently setting a new date for bilateral negotiations between the two countries. 

Canada and the United States had committed to working on a new economic and security agreement with a July 21 deadline for a deal. The boosted tariff pressures call into question progress toward the initial time frame.

At around 6 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a thunderstorm warning for the Airdrie area, which has since been downgraded.

Environment Canada meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

According to ECCC, that line of thunderstorms extends from 10 km north of Cochrane to just southeast of Didsbury and is moving southeastwards at 40 km/h. 

The main threat with this line of thunderstorms was strong wind gusts.
