UPDATE: Strong winds, hail possible as storms approach Airdrie
At around 6 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a thunderstorm warning for the Airdrie area, which has since been downgraded.
Environment Canada meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.
According to ECCC, that line of thunderstorms extends from 10 km north of Cochrane to just southeast of Didsbury and is moving southeastwards at 40 km/h.
The main threat with this line of thunderstorms was strong wind gusts.
UPDATE: Collision causing delays near Balzac Overpass
A multi-vehicle collision was slowing down traffic on the QEII but has since cleared.
According to reports, the collision was located in the southbound lanes by the Balzac Overpass.
Crews are no longer on the scene.

Prickly park alert: Porcupine closes part of off leash dog park in Airdrie
The north portion of Big Springs Dog Park is temporarily closed due to porcupine activity in the area, according to a July 10 update from the City of Airdrie.
Big Springs Dog Park, is, according to the city, "Partially fenced in area located on the pathway south of the cemetery to Spring Haven Crescent. This area is fenced between the QEII Highway and runs along the backyard residential area."
“While porcupines are generally non-aggressive, they can pose a risk to dogs,” the city stated.
Rocky View County farm family honoured at Calgary Stampede
A fifth-generation grain and hay farming family from west of Airdrie was among 19 recipients of the Calgary Stampede’s 2025 BMO Farm Family Awards, recognized Sunday at Stampede Park in Calgary.
The Woolliams family, owners of Woolliams Farms Ltd., were nominated by Rocky View County and honoured July 6 during an official reception and awards brunch hosted by the Calgary Stampede.
Bluff charge prompts bear warning for Kananaskis trail
A bear warning is in effect for a trail in Kananaskis Country after a grizzly bluff charged a hiker. Alberta Parks issued the warning on July 8 for the Bill Milne Trail between Wedge Pond and Mt. Allan Drive.
The warning applies to the Bill Milne Trail, Evan-Thomas PRA, Wedge Pond Day Use, and Mt. Allan Drive. Officials say the warning will remain in place until further notice.
Although the incident occurred in a specific section of the trail, Alberta Parks reminds visitors that bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time.
Family Fishing Weekend: What you need to know before you cast
Albertans can cast a line without a licence this weekend as part of Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekend, running July 12 and 13.
According to the province’s My Wild Alberta website, residents and visitors can fish on waterbodies with open fishing seasons without purchasing a sportfishing licence. All regular sportfishing regulations remain in effect.
Fishing licences are still required for anyone using a Special Harvest Licence, including tags for Walleye.
Residents capture dramatic cloudscapes during Airdrie's tornado watch
A tornado watch issued earlier Wednesday evening for Rocky View County, including Airdrie and Crossfield, was lifted just before 8 p.m., according to Environment Canada.
The watch had been issued at 5:25 p.m., when the agency warned that “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.” Forecasters also noted the potential for strong winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.

More Canadians from Pool B at the Calgary Stampede are going to Championship Sunday
Yesterday the top 3 in the Pool B aggregate qualified for Championship Sunday including some Albertans and fellow Canadians.
Big Valley's Zeke Thurston is in great shape heading into Championship Sunday as he looks for another championship buckle after placing first in the aggregate in Pool B.
Kendal Pierson from Wardlaw, Alberta also just made the Breakaway Roping finals as she finished third in the aggregate.
Pool C also has some key local competitors to keep your eyes on over the next three days.
Rocky View Handibus service sees surge in trips
The Rocky View Regional Handibus Society is on pace to have another busy year.
Paul Siller, the society's executive director, explained that they are nearly 10 per cent higher in the number of rides this time of year compared to 2024.
"We've done 7542 trips this year, which is a little over 9 per cent of last year."
He explained the trips will slow down a little bit over the summer, but that is expected.
"We are going to shift to a new computer program, which should create even more efficiency for us and put more people on the bus."
