Telling T’əl’s tale: RWB to perform world premiere by Choreographer in Residence

According to legend, there’s a wild man who kidnaps children from a village after dark, never to be seen again. And he’s the subject of a brand new work presented by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.  

T’əl is something that is familiar to many different cultures and many different peoples but specifically to the West Coast,” says RWB Choreographer in Residence Cameron Fraser-Monroe.  

 

Sir Andrew Davis dead at 80

The celebrated English conductor made a deep impression on musical scenes stretching across three continents.  

Born in Ashridge, England, Davis' first major post was as associate conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra before crossing the pond as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, beginning in 1975. 

For 13 years, he served in the role and is credited with helping raise the global profile of the orchestra through tours of China, Europe, Australia and Northern Canada.

On April 19th 2024 the Halifax based music label Leaf Music released the Debut Solo Album by Canadian Pianist David Potvin. Called Catharsis, this album features music written by three wonderful Canadian composers Jean Coulthard, Cris Derksen and Keiko Devaux.

Canzona birthday bash to close out Winnipeg Baroque Festival

This weekend, Winnipeg’s baroque chamber choir Canzona celebrates 35 years – and they’re throwing a party!  

The last concert in the Winnipeg Baroque Festival lineup happens on Sunday when Canzona and their artistic director Elroy Friesen welcome back old friends, special guests and their founding conductor, Dr. Henry Engbrecht.  

Faith in Fiddles: Baroque specialists perform some magnificent chamber music this Saturday night.

This Saturday night, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, the Winnipeg Baroque Festival will be presenting the seventh concert in what has been so far an amazing week of performances.

Called Fidem in Fidibus or Faith in Fiddles, this concert will showcase Baroque chamber music from 17th-century Italy, Austria, and Germany.

Pianist Jammie Lee wins tenth biennial WMC McLellan Competition

It was a thrilling evening of music at Jubilee Place Auditorium. 

Three decidedly different finalists -- cellist Sam Nadurak, soprano Christina Thanisch-Smith, and pianist Jammie Lee -- performed alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Julian Pellicano in the final round of the prestigious WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance. 

After a lengthy deliberation, the judges awarded the $10,000 top prize to pianist Jammie Lee for his performance of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff.

The Winnipeg Baroque Festival opened its run last Sunday with a pair of choral concerts.  

After a brief pause, the early music offerings are set to ramp up again with 7 concerts happening over the next four days, including one featuring a solo artist: violinist Karl Stobbe.
