Premier Smith not sold on killing of consumer carbon tax, wants industrial levy plan

Despite calling for its demise for years, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she isn't fazed by the new prime minister's move to kill the consumer carbon levy.

On Friday — moments after news broke that Prime Minister Mark Carney had eliminated the pricing scheme — Smith told reporters in Calgary the real test of the new federal government will be how it levies carbon pricing on industrial polluters.

"Every time I have heard the new prime minister speak, he has said that he doesn't think (industrial) prices are high enough," she said.

Canadian woman returns home after being detained by U.S. immigration officials

A Canadian woman detained for nearly two weeks by immigration officials in the United States is back on home soil, her mother confirmed.

Alexis Eagles said her daughter, Jasmine Mooney, landed at the Vancouver International Airport at around midnight Saturday and returned to her home in the city.

Eagles said she was at the airport to greet her 35-year-old daughter, along with friends of the businesswoman and former actress.

China set to impose 100% tariffs on Canadian peas

Earlier this week, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced their results of an anti-discrimination investigation into Canada for imposing a 100% tariff on Chinese EV’s, and 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum products last year. From this investigation, the State Council Tariff Commission announced retaliatory tariffs of an additional 100% on Canadian peas on March 20th. Sask. retains spot as third-fastest growing in building permits in Statistics Canada data

Statistics Canada has released a new set of data which shows that Saskatchewan is continuing on its path forward for growing value in building permits, which had a 78.7 per cent increase from January 2024 compared to January 2025 (seasonally adjusted).

The figure would place Saskatchewan third among the provinces for year-over-year growth. Saskatchewan has kept that figure going over the last few months in what has been a consistent performance among the provinces for growth in the value of building permits. 

Prime Minister Mark Carney's government terminates consumer carbon price

Prime Minister Mark Carney's first move after taking office on Friday was to eliminate the consumer carbon price, undoing Justin Trudeau's signature climate policy.

Carney addressed members of the media after the Friday afternoon cabinet meeting, saying the government is "focused on action."

"We will be eliminating the Canada fuel charge, the consumer fuel charge, immediately, immediately," he said.

The order-in-council Carney signed in front of cabinet ministers and the press actually stipulates that the "the fuel charge be removed as of April 1, 2025."

Minor hockey provincial update

The Elgar Petersen Arena will be buzzing on Sunday afternoon as the U13 A Humboldt Broncos host the Meadow Lake Stampeders in game two of the north final of the ‘B’ Provincials. Humboldt defeated Meadow Lake in game one of the series last Sunday. The south final will be decided on Saturday between the Moosomin Rangers and Shaunavon Badgers, Moosomin leads 1-0 in that series. 

A couple of Watrous teams are still alive in provincial hockey playoffs.
