Leaders take their campaigns to Western Canada as federal election nears midpoint

The leaders of the top three federal parties were campaigning Tuesday in Western Canada, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to crack down on offshore tax loopholes by appointing a tax task force.

The Conservatives said the task force would be asked to make the rules simpler and more fair and would ensure large companies can't "stash their money in offshore tax havens."

Rise in asylum seekers to Canada as migrants' protected status set to expire in U.S.

There has been a steady rise in the number of people seeking asylum at a major border crossing south of Montreal, border officials said Tuesday amid concerns that Trump administration policies could drive another massive influx of migrants to Canada.

The rise in would-be refugees at the St-Bernard-de-Lacolle crossing coincides with the looming expiration of the temporary status of hundreds of thousands of migrants in the United States.

Dazza Mitchell Commits to NCAA DIV III at the University of Dubuque

The Humboldt Broncos and the City of Humboldt are proud to announce that Dazza Mitchell has committed to the University of Dubuque and will continue his hockey and academic career at the NCAA DIV III Level as a member of the Spartans for the 2025-26 season.

Dazza was acquired as a 20-year-old by the Broncos prior to the 2025 trade deadline, where he culminated an incredibly accomplished SJHL career with a 9-5-1-2 record with a “dazzling” .932 SV% as a Bronco.

Community Car Chat highlights unusual local collection

Then it’s time to come out and rub shoulders with kindred collectors and knowledge keepers at Community Car Chat. The event is coming up this Thursday evening. 

The chat session runs in conjunction with the travelling exhibit from the Canadian Automotive Museum called Exit the Horse: The Early Years of Canadian Motoring, and its local version about Humboldt and the age of automobiles called The Open Road. 

Lisa Andeerson explores the tradition and the spiritual connection of the pysanky

Lisa Anderson of Bruno brought her artistic talent to the Humboldt and District Gallery on Saturday, April 5 as she demonstrated the art of pysanky. The decorated eggs are a familiar Easter tradition associated with Ukraine but may actually date back even earlier in Persia and the Middle East.  

Anderson is not a Ukrainian descendant, but she picked up the art form from family friends back in her native Ontario. She says she was smitten with the art form and has researched and practiced honing her skills over the years.
