Prime Minister Mark Carney announces support measures for softwood lumber industry

The federal government is setting up a safety net of loans, product-development grants and market diversification plans for Canada’s softwood lumber industry in an effort to shield it from the worst of American duties and fees.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the plan Tuesday, promising $700 million in loan guarantees to address what he called "immediate pressures" and $500 million for long-term supports to help companies diversify export markets and develop their products.

Carney also promised that future projects will "prioritize" Canadian lumber.

Are the smoky conditions impacting insect populations?

Some residents of Southern Manitoba have been noticing different trends this summer when it comes to insects. And the question has been asked whether our smoky conditions have played a role.

John Gavloski is an Entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture. He says studies have been done with biting flies and smoke. However, he cautions that the tricky part is that the impact of the smoke is very dependent on the intensity and the duration.

"So, trying to make implications to what is happening in Southern Manitoba with the Northern Manitoba wildfires is very tricky," he says.

The goal of the new system is to improve worker safety, reduce litter, and streamline collection operations.

From threshing machines to aquaculture: students and volunteers bring history to life in Austin

The Austin Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede saw thousands of people join them in their celebratory weekend showcasing what pioneer life was like over a hundred years ago on the Prairies in Manitoba, through demonstrations, displays and tours at this year's Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion & Stampede.

It was the 69th year for this 4-day event that started in the 1940s when concern was raised about the slow disappearance of farming equipment and machinery used in the earliest years of pioneering.
