Solo paddle from Portage to The Forks unleashes spirit of the river

Josh Wright of Portage la Prairie had imagined the journey for over a decade. On May 8, he finally pushed his 21-foot fiberglass canoe into the Assiniboine River at the Hoop and Holler Bend, bound for The Forks in Winnipeg—a 153-kilometre trip through forested bends, shifting winds and ancient waterways.

"I’ve driven over the Assiniboine many times and thought, what would it be like to just float down the river and make it to Winnipeg like people did many years ago. That dream never left me."

Strike threat could push more customers away from struggling Canada Post

Canada Post customers may face delays as tens of thousands of workers swear off overtime shifts, though a much bigger disruption was averted after the union backed down from a strike threat.

Close to 1,000 people were forced from their homes last week as a wildfire near the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet, spurred by dry, hot and windy conditions, burned nearby.

The quick-moving fire, which is currently being held, destroyed 28 homes and cottages and left two people dead.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” could contain some beautiful news for Canada’s canola growers.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ ways and means committee has released its draft proposals for the U.S. budget reconciliation bill.

The proposals include provisions to amend the controversial 45Z clean fuel production tax credit so that canola oil-based biodiesel and renewable diesel would be eligible for the credit.

Producer groups come together to help fund ag research facilities at U of S

Construction is underway at the University of Saskatchewan that will see critical facility improvements within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Two new facilities are being built - the Harrington Plant Growth Facility and the Soil Science Field Facility - while a portion of the Crop Science Field Lab is being renovated to provide additional workspace for the Crop Development Centre. 

Yellowquill School students step up for Beautification Days

Students and staff at Yellowquill School are taking environmental responsibility into their own hands during the third annual Beautification Days here in Portage la Prairie,

Grade 5 teacher Cole Goyak has been spearheading their efforts for the past three years, organizing activities for staff and students to partake in.

"We take one day out of the year, usually around Earth Day, to pick up garbage and clean up our school grounds," Goyak explained. "It's about keeping the area safe and clean for everyone."
