As the cold creeps closer and closer, the Farmers Almanac has released its forecast for the 2023-24 winter season.

The forecast covers all of North America, with forecasts usually broken down by region.

For this winter, the forecast has put the Prairies at an average amount of snowfall with very cold conditions.

If Facebook blocks DiscoverEstevan posts, how do I find my local news?

Discovering news articles, photos and videos on Facebook and Instagram will soon become a relic of the past, as Meta has begun ending news availability in Canada. 

Already many Facebook and Instagram users in Estevan and the southeast have noticed they no longer have access to posts from DiscoverEstevan, CJ 1150, Sun 102, and Rock 106.  

In June, Meta started running a test that limited news for up to five per cent of users, but now it says it is moving out of the testing phase.  

Ahead of the 2023 hunting season, the Manitoba government has introduced new amendments to the Wildlife Protection Regulation to simplify data collection and provide more options for hunters to engage in the mandatory sample requirements for chronic wasting disease (CWD), Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced today.

Three people are in hospital following a serious multi-vehicle collision at the same intersection where 17 people were killed in a collision with a semi six weeks ago.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that on July 31, 2023, at approximately 4:45 pm, Blue Hills RCMP received a report of a multi-vehicle collision at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 5 in the RM of North Cypress-Langford.

The City of Winnipeg is cautioning motorists that even bigger disruptions are coming to a busy Winnipeg bridge that has already seen significant closures and delays for road work.

The City sent out a release late last week, saying that "Extensive lane closures in place on the St. James Bridge will be expanded in the coming weeks to accommodate increasing maintenance work."

The work will increase safety and "ride quality," the City says in the release. Crews will be repairing the bridge deck, traffic barriers, and approach roadways.

A Vietnamese pastor who has continually faced legal issues with his government is reportedly in poor health and being denied access to medical care.

Voice of the Martyrs Canada (VOTM), a Canadian persecution watchdog, says that pastor Nguyen Trung Ton was imprisoned in 2011 on charges of "anti-state propaganda." He was re-arrested in 2017 and convicted in April 2018 for "carrying out activities aimed at overthrowing the government." The Christian leader was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A new program launched by a Manitoba youth and family support organization is being touted as a "cutting-edge gang prevention campaign" to prevent young people from joining gangs or helping them get out.

The Link is says the new program is aimed at youth throughout the province with informative and "gritty" videos, as well as a text line. The initiative is led and funded by the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) Organized Crime Committee and Manitoba Justice.

The Taste of Summer Charity BBQ is back for its fourth of five weeks, and this time Golden West Broadcasting is raising money for Limitless Disability Advocacy Services.

Limitless was founded in 2019 to help offer programming for kids with disabilities. One of the things the non-profit now has expanded to is offering seats in an Affinity Place box for Estevan Bruins games.
