Crop would be eligible for biofuel tax credit under recent budget proposals in Congress

U.S. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” could contain some beautiful news for Canada’s canola growers.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ ways and means committee has released its draft proposals for the U.S. budget reconciliation bill.

The proposals include provisions to amend the controversial 45Z clean fuel production tax credit so that canola oil-based biodiesel and renewable diesel would be eligible for the credit.

Two new facilities are being built - the Harrington Plant Growth Facility and the Soil Science Field Facility - while a portion of the Crop Science Field Lab is being renovated to provide additional workspace for the Crop Development Centre. 

Justin Sambu returns for second season with Stamps

Cochrane Cobras alumus Justin Sambu is back with the Calgary Stampeders for his sophomore season in the CFL.

The 6-foot-2, 282-pound defensive lineman made a solid impact last year, racking up 10 tackles and four sacks in just eight games. He joined the Stamps after being originally drafted by the Toronto Argos and being cut after appearing in two exhibit games with the Argos last season.

Sambu didn't get game time into Week 9 of the CFL season and immediately made a statement with his first of four sacks on the season.

Richards says it continues to take far too long to process claims of veterans

Delays in providing benefits and services to Canadian veterans remain far too long and are leading to dire consequences in some cases, says Airdrie-Cochrane MP Blake Richards.

Richards will continue as the Conservative shadow minister for Veterans Affairs. While he would prefer to see a Conservative government in place, he said he is eager to continue advocating for veterans—a role he began in October 2022.

School division pulls funds from reserves to balance budget

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is having to pull funds out of reserve to balance its budget for the 2025-26 school year.

On May 22, the RVS board of trustees approved a $344.5-million operating budget after drawing $1.4-million from reserves. It has maintained a reserve balance of one to two per cent, which is just above the mandated amount set by the government and is within RVS’ own guidelines for budget 2025/26.

West Rocky View cleared, east still under fire advisory

A fire advisory has been lifted for West Rocky View County, officials announced late yesterday afternoon, citing improved conditions following recent precipitation.

Effective immediately, there are no fire advisories or bans in the western region of the county, and permit burning is once again permitted. However, the fire advisory remains in effect for East Rocky View County, where fire permits will not be issued at this time.
