Chinook celebrating 20th anniversary with viewing of the film "Ezra"

The Chinook Film Group is celebrating its 20th anniversary tomorrow night (Wed. Nov. 20) with a viewing of the film "Ezra" at the Cochrane Movie House at 7 p.m.

Starring Bobby Cannavale, Robert DeNiro, Rose Byrne and introducing the young autistic actor William A. Fitzgerald, the film discusses the challenges posed to those on the autism spectrum and the generational nature of the condition.

Free movie night to feature brand new blockbusters

Cochrane Home Treasures is treating the community to a special movie night with free tickets for some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. The event will take place at the Cochrane Movie House on Wednesday, November 27th.

The tickets are available starting today when the box office opens. “We’re offering a free community movie night to help foster a sense of community,” says Home Treasures manager Cayley Breeze. “It’s also a great opportunity for people who might not be able to afford a night at the movies."

Cremona man charged with attempted murder

A Cremona man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a violent incident in the early hours of Nov. 18, 2024. Didsbury RCMP responded to the scene at a residence in Cremona following a call from a complainant in Calgary.

“At approximately 2:30 in the morning, Didsbury RCMP was dispatched to a report of a disturbance,” says RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney. “The complainant called police and indicated that there was a male in that residence who was attacking two other occupants.”

Ottawa seeks project pitches for new mental health fund aimed at youth

Health and Addictions Minister Ya'ara Saks is looking for pitches to help young Canadians who are struggling with their mental health.

The federal government plans to distribute $500 million for projects that help young people struggling to afford private mental health care services.

The funding comes from the five-year Youth Mental Health Fund announced in the spring federal budget to tackle the stress, anxiety and depression young people are facing amid a high cost of living and global uncertainty.

Emergency Alert Test scheduled for tomorrow afternoon

Cochranites can expect to hear an emergency public alert tomorrow on their radio, TV and smart phone. 

The test message is scheduled to go out at 1:55 PM on Wednesday as part of a nationwide test of the alert system.  

The exact time of the test will vary depending on the province or territory, according to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The alerts are meant to warn Canadians of potentially life-threatening situations.

Manitoba Canola Growers release 2024 variety trial results

Farmers across Manitoba and the prairies can now access the results of the 2024 Canola Variety Evaluation Trials, a critical resource for making informed seed selection decisions. Spearheaded by the Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA), this program marks the first year of province-specific program following the discontinuation of the Prairie-wide Canola Performance Trials in 2022.

Group photo latest effort to protect Wetland 80

The fight continues to preserve Wetland 80 in The Willows neighbourhood.

A group of about 30 people gathered for the photograph that will be used to continue to draw attention to the issue that arose after Madlee Developments proposed to destroy it in the next phase of The Willows. Several people bought homes in the area in part based upon the promise that the wetland would be preserved indefinitely.
