Government House leader Steven MacKinnon says the NDP will not be granted official party status because the law says a party needs at least 12 seats to be recognized.

The NDP was reduced to just seven seats in last month's election.

Interim NDP Leader Don Davies has told The Canadian Press he spoke with the Prime Minister's Office about obtaining official party status for the NDP in the House of Commons.

Davies pointed to several past instances of provincial legislatures granting party status to an opposition party.

The Cochrane Aces U11 CMSA softball team delivered a dominant performance this weekend at the Leduc Jets Spring Classic, capping off an undefeated run with a gold medal victory on Sunday.

The Aces went a perfect 4-0 over the course of the tournament, showcasing strong teamwork, solid defense, and powerful hitting. Their championship win came in convincing fashion with a 10-2 triumph in the gold medal game.

Nearly $7 million in provincial and federal spending will create six teams of urban wildfire crews, Alberta's public safety minister announced Friday.
