Parks Canada seeks input on popular Banff destination

Parks Canada is reaching out to the public early in the process of developing a plan for the Lake Minnewanka Area, one of the most popular destinations of Cochrane area residents in Banff National Park.

The public consultation has been launched in advance of preparing a draft plan and remains open until Oct. 25.

Parks Canada is first focusing on gathering information, identifying priorities, and scoping out what people really want to see the area become. The end result will essential be a road map to a sustainable path forward.

APAS calls for review of CGC's bonding and licensing system

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is calling for an immediate review of the Canadian Grain Commission's bonding and licensing system to better safeguard producers.

At 11:59 on August 27, 2024 the Canadian Grain Commission revoked the grain dealer license for Purely Canada Foods and its grain operations in Saskatchewan. Farmers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta that may have unpaid deliveries with the company should contact the CGC immediately.

Poilievre urges Singh to end NDP deal with Liberals, force fall election

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has written to the leader of the New Democrats, urging him to force an election this fall.

Poilievre's letter to Jagmeet Singh says the NDP does not have a mandate from voters to keep Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in power for another year.

He's urging Singh to vote non-confidence in the government when the House of Commons resumes in September.

The NDP entered a supply and confidence deal with the Liberals in 2022, agreeing to keep the minority government in power until 2025 in exchange for movement on key priorities.

Gens camp opens tonight, preseason starts next week

The Cochrane Generals training camp gets underway tonight and before you know it they'll be lacing up to kick off the 2024-25 season of the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL).

Tonight, new goalie coach Trevor Devnich will be evaluating eight to nine goalies, including last year starters Isaiah Madigan and Braydon Yonin. Tomorrow, the main camp opens and continues until Sunday.

New Cochrane Generals head coach Derek Bell is fired up for the start of the hockey season.

The Cochrane and Area Events Society has released a map of the new route, and where to find the pre-parade entertainment. It also highlights the location of the annual Cochrane Activettes pancake breakfast and where you can make donations to Helping Hands.

The biggest change is the elimination of Centre Ave. from the route. The shortened route adds additional focus to the Historic Downtown as a viewing area for families.

Study finds no evidence Tories were behind bot campaign that posted about Poilievre

There is no evidence that indicates the federal Conservatives were behind a bot network on social media that praised a Pierre Poilievre rally, a new study has found. 

The Canadian Digital Media Research Network launched an investigation after hundreds of X accounts posted about the Conservative leader's July rally in Kirkland Lake, Ont., all using the same language with phrases like "buzzing with energy" and "as a northern Ontarian."

Cochranite carries Alberta flag in Canada 55+ Games opening ceremony

Cochrane's Doug Campbell was one of two flag bearers for Alberta in the Canada 55+ Games now underway in Quebec City.

The second day of competition is wrapping up and continue until Friday.

Last night (Aug. 27), 3,800 people attended the opening ceremonies in Quebec City.  About 2,800 senior athletes are competing, making it the largest games ever in its 28-year history. It's the first time Quebec has hosted the games.

RVS students asked to leave cellphones, personal devices at home

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is encouraging students to leave personal mobile devices at home when classes resume next week.

In a new release today, RVS announced students cannot use their personal mobile device in school during instructional time, unless specially authorized by their school’s administrator or their teacher for educational purposes.
