First of four tree fruit roundup days this Saturday
This Saturday, Aug. 31 is the first of four community fruit tree roundup days that aim to mitigate human-wildlife conflict while providing food for consumption.
Those with excess fruit from trees on their property can deliver them to the town lagoon, 141 Bow Bend Way (adjacent to the SLS Centre) from 12 noon to 3 p.m. this Saturday.
Recognizing that not all tree fruit has ripened, there's additional collection days on Sept. 14, 28 and Oct. 5.
CGC revokes grain licence for Purely Canada Foods Corp
Farmers owed money for unpaid deliveries to Purely Canada Foods Corp. are encouraged to contact the Canadian Grain Commission immediately.
The CGC revoked the grain dealer licence and primary elevator licences for Purely Canada Foods Corp. in Avonlea, Kindersley, and Lajord, Saskatchewan as of 11:59 pm last night (August 27).
The company may owe grain farmers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta money for grain deliveries.

Culture Days to light up Cochrane, Sept. 7-8

The Cochrane Music Society has announced the Sept. 7 and 8 lineups for Culture Days and Culture Fest, organized by the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee (CISC), is set to return on Sept. 7.
Culture Days performances begin at the Cochrane Farmers Market on Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sharp rise in whooping cough cases reported in several provinces
Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Canada, with some provinces reporting sharp increases compared to pre-pandemic averages.
More than 11,670 cases have been reported in Quebec so far this year, a significant jump from the annual average of 562 cases between 2015 and 2019.
The majority of whooping cough patients are between the ages of 10 and 14, a spokesperson for Quebec's health ministry said in an email to The Canadian Press.
The last peak of whooping cough activity in the province was in 2019, when 1,269 cases were reported, the email said.
Vote on $47.8B First Nations child welfare deal delayed due to chiefs' concerns
The Assembly of First Nations has postponed a special assembly for chiefs to vote on a landmark child welfare reform deal with Canada due to concerns about the process and a late translation of the document to French.
The Assembly was scheduled to be held in September in Winnipeg, but it will not happen now until October or November, the AFN said Tuesday.
Up to 40 mm of rain possible for Cochrane area
A significant change in weather is quickly on its way to the Cochrane area.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for the region saying upwards of 40 mm of rain is expected by Wednesday evening.
Heavy rain and strong winds are expected Tuesday evening with showers becoming more intense throughout Wednesday.
A strong northerly wind is expected to develop early Wednesday morning and gusts could reach upwards of 80 km/h.
The strong wind is expected to weaken by Wednesday afternoon.
Daniel in the hunt for third Paralympics medal
Stefan Daniel is in search of his third medal at the Paralympics that open tomorrow in Paris.
After years of preparation and success in the world circuit, the 27-year-old athlete competes in the para triathlon on Sunday.
Daniel's breakthrough silver medal performance at the 2016 Rio Paralympics landed Canada its first medal in para triathlon. He followed it up five years later with a bronze in Toyko.

Thursday, Aug. 29 is a major moment in history for the people of the Stoney Nakoda Nations.
While many of us have come to call Morley by its Stoney name Mînî Thnî in recent years, the change becomes official on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The Stoney Nakoda chiefs and tribal council are hosting afternoon celebration that includes a grand entrance, drum circles, traditional dances, speeches and the official unveiling. Previous to this, a pipe ceremony will be held.
