Sellout crowd for Bow Valley Film Tour
Rongqin Su, of the Canmore-based Bow Valley Film Institute, got on his phone yesterday when he found out the third stop of the Bow Valley Film Tour was another sold-out affair.
It made its first stop ever in Cochrane on Aug. 22 and the successful night opens the door to its return and possibly an extra night next year at the Cochrane Movie House.
Featured were eight short films, each varying in length, yet equal in intensity. The filmmakers and their subjects bared their souls on the screen of their lives and adventures in the breathtaking yet unyielding Rockies.

Canada's two biggest railways say they’re preparing to get trains back on track after Ottawa intervened to end an unprecedented labour impasse that disrupted business across the country and cancelled commutes for thousands.
Canadian National Railway Co., in a statement Thursday, said it has ended the lockout of workers that began earlier in the day.
The move came shortly after Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon said he has asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration to end the dispute and get the trains running.
Federal government imposes binding arbitration, ending railway stoppage after less than 24 hours
The federal government has decided to impose binding arbitration between the Teamster's Canada Rail Conference, CN Rail, and CPKC.
The worker's union and the two companies had entered into a lockout at 12:01 a.m. this morning.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the decision at a news conference in the afternoon.
That came after the Canada Industrial Relations Board set August 22 as the date for strike action, following a decision that labeled the rail industry as non-essential.

Play starts tomorrow night (Aug. 23) with a blind draw at the Cochrane Lions Events Centre starting around 7:30 p.m. It continues with women's singles and men's doubles Saturday morning, mixed doubles in the afternoon, then concludes on Sunday with men's singles and women's doubles.
Pedestrian underpass returns to Hwy 1A
While construction for the Hwy 1A/22 interchange continues progressing, a well-loved feature has returned to the area.
The pedestrian underpass has reopened which takes Cochranties under Hwy 1A.
Before construction, the underpass was a well-used path for walkers and cyclists to travel between the Cochrane Ranche and Glenbow Drive.
For months, pedestrians have had to use a crossing light to stop traffic and walk across the major highway.
Major construction on this project began in May 2023 and is expected to take around 3 years to complete.
Canada's rail system has ground to a halt
CN and CPKC took steps early Thursday morning to lockout over 9000 employees who are members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference after an agreement was not reached.
In a press release following the lockout, CN notes that they chose to lock out employees after the union did not respond to another offer by CN in a final attempt to avoid a labour disruption.

In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers after the parties disagreed on a new contract before the midnight deadline.

Two young ladies are seeking to be crowned the new Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen.
Lacey Blouin and Kesten Savage are being currently being judged by an independent panel on their horsemanship, public speaking, rodeo knowledge and personality.
Seventeen-year-old Lacey was born and raised in the Cochrane area and her parents met at the Cochrane Lions Labour Day Weekend Rodeo.
She's been attending the local rodeo since a young age and admires the important role played by rodeo queen.
