For the second consecutive year, Steinbach's Derrick Penner had an excellent showing at the Skills Canada National Competition which took place May 25th and 26th in Winnipeg.

Currently attending Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg, Penner participated in the Post Secondary Cabinetry competition against students from across the country, bringing home gold in the category, having also won gold at the National competition in Vancouver in 2022.

In addition, Derrick was selected for the RBC Best of Region Award for Manitoba at the 2023 event.

On Sunday, Federal by-elections were announced in four ridings across the country, including Portage-Lisgar. Voters will head to the polls Monday, June 19th. A by-election became necessary in the riding after former Conservative Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen resigned her seat in the House of Commons earlier this year.

The Red River continues to rise as water from the U.S. moves northward, with the crest is expected from Emerson to the Red River Floodway inlet between today and Friday. According to the Manitoba Hydrologic Forecast Centre's Sunday report, River levels rose just less than half a foot yesterday from Emerson to Morris.

In the latest daily report from the Manitoba Hydrologic Forecast Centre, it was noted most tributaries in the basin have peaked or are near their peak, but a major risk of flooding remains between Emerson and the Floodway inlet.

According to the province's latest spring flood outlook, released this morning, there is now a major risk of flooding along the Red River, and low to moderate risk of flooding in most Manitoba basins. Recent precipitation events south of the border in the United States are the main factor for the flood risk on the Red increasing. Winter precipitation has been well above normal in the U.S. portion of the basin, and below normal on the Manitoba side.

Just over two dozen individuals were freezin for a reason Saturday afternoon at Lake Minnewasta for the return of the Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Manitoba. Organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Morden Police Sergeant Scott Edwards is part of the local committee which brought the event back for the first time since 2020. The Morden event was moved to Lake Minnewasta this year, and held alongside a pond hockey tournament happening at the same time.

The risk is now near, or above, long-term historical averages across the U.S. portion of the Red River basin.

The forecast does not include potential impacts from this weekend's potentially significant snowfall event.
