Humboldt Broncos

The Weyburn Red Wings snatched one back from the Humboldt Broncos last night as the Wings took a 5-3 win on home ice.  

Weyburn's Braigh LeGrandeur opened up scoring early in the first, but Cage Newans took advantage of a power play to even it up.  

At the Monday night meeting of City Council for March, Mayor Michael Behiel signed a pair of proclamations honouring the legacy of the 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos.  

The proclamations acknowledged the tragic bus accident that resulted in the heartbreaking loss of 16 people and the everlasting impact on 13 survivors, families and the community.  

The proclamation expressed the outpouring of love felt from those around the world who rallied around the team. 

It came down to a couple minutes overtime, but the Melville Millionaires came up fast in the third period to erase a Humboldt Broncos lead and take a 6-5 victory last night in Melville.  

The Mills struck first in the opening frame, by Spencer Bell tied it up.  

Humboldt got the edge in the second period scoring four goals to the Millionaires two. Goals came in from Maddox Amaral, Jacob Strizzi with his first Bronco goal, Brayden Skogstad and Daylan Weigel. 

There was certainly no holiday hangover for Humboldt.

The Broncos were tasked with a healthy dose of travel in the new year with back-to-back road games to open the 2024 stretch to the playoffs.

Starting with Saskatchewan’s east in the Parkland region on Friday night, the Broncos took care of business, taming the Yorkton Terriers in a 3-1 victory. The following night they hopped back on the bus to the West Central Events Centre defeating their division rival, the Kindersley Klippers, 6-4.

Airdronian Ryan Straschnitzki has his sights set on the 2026 Paralympics.

Straschnitzki, a survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, has made progress in his recovery since having surgery in 2019 and hopes to play for Canada's para hockey team at the 2026 Paralympics.

These past few months for Staschnitzki have been busy, as he has been training, doing physiotherapy, and finishing his course on accessibility architecture while working on his new foundation, The Straz Strong Foundation.

April 6, 2018 will be a day we all remember.

Looking back five years ago until now we are all at different places in life.

I had the opportunity to chat with Robin Lukan, mother of Conner Lukan, who was one of the individuals who passed away in the Bronco accident. 

After losing your son in the accident how did you and your family journey through the grief and process the accident? What moments might stick out more than others. Did staying in contact with the others impacted help your journey? What else was helpful?

April 4th, 2018 was the last game the 2017/2018 Humboldt Broncos played.

There was light snow and it was a mild winter day, around minus 12; however, it was a heated thriller in the EPA with a triple overtime hockey game. Tyler Bieber was on the call.

The Nipawin Hawks were looking for a win in game 4 of the playoff series but the Broncos were not going down without a fight and a fight it was in a marathon back and forth game.

The crowd was on the edge of their seats through the three overtime periods.

Five years ago, the world stopped as news spread of the Humboldt Bronco bus accident.

We remember them today and always.

At the regular Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday, March 27, Mayor Michael Behiel issued two proclamations, one of which was to declare April 6, 2023 as 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos Day. 

A statement issued by the City of Humboldt notes that, in collaboration with representatives of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Families, it is preparing a hybrid tribute of videos and on-line content to honor the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos and all those impacted.
