A chilly welcome: Reliving the first harsh winter for Mennonite settlers in 1874

As the chill of winter begins to settle in, the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum in Steinbach is offering a unique exhibit to help visitors understand what it was like for the first Mennonites who arrived in Manitoba 150 years ago.

Inside the Gerhard Enns Gallery, assistant curator Garth Doerksen shared some fascinating insights into what the early settlers brought with them, and the hardships they faced during their first harsh winter in Canada.

Provencher MP Ted Falk not surprised by Jagmeet Singh’s move to end Liberal-NDP deal

Provencher MP Ted Falk says he wasn’t surprised to hear of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s decision to withdraw from their confidence and supply agreement with the Liberal government. 

"Today’s news from Jagmeet Singh isn’t really a shocker. The NDP are gearing up for their caucus retreat before Parliament starts up again, and there’s been a lot of pressure on Singh from his own party. They’re seeing their polling numbers drop and think it’s tied to their deal with the Liberals." 

Falk didn’t hold back on his criticism of Singh’s past decisions.  

New Interpretive Centre Approved in the RM of Stuartburn

RM of Stuartburn council members recently approved a Conditional Use Permit for an Interpretive Centre to be built. Reeve Michelle Gawronsky shares about the new project in the community.

"We had a request from the Orthodox Mennonites who’ve recently moved into our area. They wanted to build an interpretive center and last week, Council gave the green light."

RM of Piney excited to join Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities

The RM of Piney council recently made the decision to join the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM). Reeve Wayne Anderson says this was done as a strategic move aimed at strengthening regional ties and enhancing local services. 

Anderson says that Piney’s council had long been interested in joining the AMBM but had been unable to meet the requirements for Francophone representation.

Community supports Vita church renos with over $13,000 in donations

The 100-year-old Catholic Church in Vita has a new roof.  

Four months ago, the church bells at San Isidore Church were heard ringing once again. Since then, the church has been filled each weekend for Mass. With the congregation steadily growing came the recognition that the building needed some repairs.
