Veteran in Vita gets valuable mobility aids to improve quality of life

The Steinbach Legion is dipping into its Poppy Fund to provide mobility aids to a veteran living in Vita. 

President Bill Richards says the Legion was notified by an occupational therapist that a lift chair and motorized scooter would greatly improve the quality of life for Wayne Malmsten. 

“This gentleman, up until Saturday, was actually using an old lazy boy chair on pieces of two by four,” Richards reports. 

The Great Backyard Bird Count runs this weekend, and is open to everyone

We can join a free worldwide event this weekend while making a valuable contribution to science with the 26th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count which runs from Friday to Monday. 

Conservation biologist Matt Gasner with Nature Conservancy of Canada says there are some really good reasons we should consider participating in this worldwide bird count. 

Manitoba schools get 6.1% increase in operating funding for new school year

School divisions will be taking a closer look at the province’s funding announcement that was made this afternoon. 

The Manitoba government is strengthening the province’s education system by increasing funding for kindergarten to Grade 12 schools by $100 million for the 2023-24 school year, representing an increase of 6.1 percent in operating funding, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko announced today. 

All Steinbach and Kleefeld schools closed as more threats phoned in

Authorities are dealing with more threats against schools in Steinbach and Kleefeld. 

Another threat was received on Thursday. As a result, all Steinbach schools and the Kleefeld School will be closed on Friday. 

The Hanover School Division has issued a notice on its website.

Elsie's Hotel Tolstoi re-opens, honours Elsie and her love for people

The hamlet of Tolstoi is becoming a destination for many people who either seek to reconnect with childhood friends or are looking for a Ukrainian experience in rural Manitoba. 

The re-opening of Elsie’s Hotel Tolstoi brings back the “Home away from home” atmosphere that was established by previous owner Elsie Kolodzinski. She and her husband Walter purchased the hotel and ran the business for 68 years. It was closed in 2008 and her children used the place as a weekend getaway spot. 

Steinbach senior killed in snowmobile crash while attempting to cross highway

A fatal collision on Wednesday morning has claimed the life of a 73-year-old man from Steinbach. 

Emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 7:40 a.m. after getting a report of a vehicle-snowmobile crash on Highway 12, near Clearsprings Road at the north end of Steinbach.
