St. Peter's College celebrates student excellence

The best and brightest students of St. Peter’s College gathered with faculty, staff and guests at the Awards Ceremony held on Saturday, September 24. The day honours students who have achieved in the areas of academics and volunteerism for their work entering the College or during their previous years of university study.

St. Peter’s College offers over $100,000 annually in scholarships, awards and bursaries. That’s in addition to the awards that are available to students through the University of Saskatchewan, with which St. Peter’s College is affiliated. 

Humboldt Broncos find the answer for Melfort with a pair of wins

The Humboldt Broncos shook off their pre-season woes with the Melfort Mustangs in dramatic fashion and skated away with a pair of wins on the weekend. 

In Friday’s 7-4 victory, the Broncos came out hard and fast with Alec Saretsky tagging the opener from Chase Lacombe, and Sam Marburg followed up with the help of Ben Kotylak and Xavier Roy. 

Municipalities can now give E-scooters a thumbs up

Saskatchewan municipalities can now choose to allow e-scooters on public roads, thanks to a new provincial regulatory framework.  

The Limited Speed Motor Vehicle Regulations, 2022, will govern the use of motorized vehicles with a maximum speed of 32 kilometres per hour. That includes e-scooters, which are becoming a more popular form of commuter transport in some urban areas. 

Conexus Credit Union invests $800,000 in Saskatchewan education programming

In a release, Conexus Credit Union announced a renewed funding commitment to the province's education and literacy programs with an injection of $800,000 over the past 5 years to strategic agencies. One of those is Big Brothers/Big Sisters, which has an extremely active chapter servicing Humboldt and area. 

Minimum wage goes up October 1

Entry level workers in the province earning minimum wage can expect a bit of a pay bump in short order. Employers and workers in Saskatchewan are reminded that the province's minimum wage will be $13 an hour effective October 1, 2022.

In May of this year the province announced the increase, which marked a departure from the indexation formula that had been used to calculate changes. At the same time, it was announced the minimum would increase to $14 on October 1, 2023 and $15 on October 1, 2024. 

City of Humboldt sponsors donation drive for Ukrainian newcomers

The City of Humboldt is sponsoring a donation drive for Ukrainian newcomers on Thursday, September 29 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Items can be dropped off at 725 15th Street, the former German Heritage Building located directly behind A & W. 

Household items can include: blankets, pillows, pots and pans, dishes and cutlery, bowls and plates, cooking utensils, furniture, towels, dishcloths, and children’s toys, among other items. Organizers are also looking for hygiene products, winter clothing, and non-perishable food items.

Westminster United Church hosts fundraising garage sale

The Westminster United Church is having a fundraising garage sale, taking place at Misty Gardens. 

September 15, 16, and 17 the Church will be selling a variety of items at Misty Gardens from 9 - 5. 

“There are great items, and great deals, so you’re not going to want to miss it,” says Brenda Kurtis, with the Church. 

Funds from the garage sale goes right back to the Church.
