The riddle of the heart comes alive at the Gallery
With Valentines Day coming up, it was the perfect opportunity to share the charm of a handmade heart, along with the puzzlement that "matters of the heart” can sometimes bring.
Crafter Ed Drachenberg was on hand at the Humboldt and District Gallery to guide his apprentices through the process of making a heart shaped wire puzzle. The puzzles are fashioned with cutters, pliers, a little solder and a little know-how.
Chili Sale the latest fundraiser to support the paws and purrs at the SPCA
The chili was warm, as was the hospitality, at the Humboldt and District SPCA Chili Sale on Friday, February 2 hosted by The Elizabeth. A crowd gathered throughout the sale to visit and warm up with a bowl of chili and baked on deep fried bannock and a beverage.
The chili sale was the latest fundraiser gathering dollars to support the day-to-day operations of the SPCA. Donations are greatly appreciated, as is the public’s attendance at fundraising efforts like the chili sale.
Local butcher back vying for King of Kovbasa
Prairieland Park was the site of a knockdown, drag out competition on Thursday, February 1 to proclaim the King of Kovbasa. This year, a local contender in the Ukrainian sausage showdown returned in the guise of Calvin Lukan from Modern Meats in Humboldt.
SaskTel Tankard under way at the Nutana in Saskatoon
The SaskTel Tankard is underway at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon. The event rolls through the weekend to the final on Sunday.
The event winner is off to the Montana’s Brier in Regina from March 1-10 clad in Saskatchewan's green jackets.
Humboldt Broncos in the mix at MJHL-SJHL showcase
Top players from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Manitoba Junior Hockey league are on the ice in Winnipeg January 30-and 31 for the MJHL-SJHL Showcase. It’s a chance for scouts to clap their eyeballs on the cream of the two leagues’ crop for the 2023-24 Year.
Humboldt SPCA preparing to host Chili and Bannock fundraiser
The Humboldt and District SPCA is preparing to host a chili and Bannock fundraiser on Friday, February 2nd.
The fundraiser will take place from 4 - 7 pm at the Elizabeth.
A bowl of chili with Bannock or a bun and a drink will cost $8 with refills of the chili costing $5.
All proceeds from this event will go back to the SPCA to help support their efforts.
RCMP continue search for Punnichy school thief
In May 2022, Punnichy RCMP received a report of a theft at Punnichy Elementary Community School that occurred between December 2021 and March 2022.
As a result of investigation, 50-year-old Shelley Dustyhorn from Kawacatoose First Nation has been charged with one count, theft over $5000, Section 334, Criminal Code.

The Humboldt Curling Club hosts another round of U15-U12 Triples Cup action
The Humboldt Curling Club was buzzing once again this weekend as curlers gathered for another CurlSask U15/U12 Triples Spiel. The new format has attracted youth from across the province to hook into the sport. Competitors, coaches and parents crisscross the province, taking part in the competitions, meeting young curling enthusiasts like themselves, and receiving coaching from some of Saskatchewan’s best.
Team Syrota wins Quill Plains Premier League Championship
Delores Syrota, June Campbell, and Sylvia Broad captured the Quill Plains Chevrolet Buick GMC Premier League Championship playing with three players with second Gloria Leach away.
Syrota had a back-and-forth game jumping to an early lead. The Brent Franko team battled back to take the lead; however, Syrota was able to force a tough draw to the button and stole in the extra end for the win. Franko's team included Murray Sunderland, Steve Moulding, and Tomas Sunderland.
Town of Lanigan decides "no" to by-election
The Town of Lanigan has elected not to hold a by-election to replace recently resigned councillor Velda Daelick. Daelick’s resignation came on December 29, 2023. However, Town Council received notice of the resignation on January 8, 2024. The decision to withhold the by-election is largely due to the timing of the upcoming general municipal elections being held in the province slated for November 13, 2024.
