The Humboldt Early Years Family Resource Centre (HEYFRC) was thrilled to launch Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library on Tuesday with a reading of The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, family literacy activities, and recognition of sponsors.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners. For now, registrants to the program must live in the Humboldt area code, but Horizon School Division’s HEYFRC Program Designer Kelly McLarty hopes the program will grow to support the family resource centre’s catchment area.

“Literacy is so important, and this is a wonderful chance for organizations and individuals to support those foundational skills for our youngest learners,” said McLarty. “We are extremely grateful to our sponsors, and we know there are many more children who would benefit from this program.”

Thanks to many generous donations, 100 children are enrolled in the program. However, more than 350 children have been identified as potential recipients. The annual cost per registered child is $47 for 12 books, to be delivered monthly. Donations are graciously accepted at the HEYFRC, 1605 8th Avenue, Humboldt, Sask.
