Garrison “Garry” Maxwell Moar
With sadness we announce that Garry Moar passed away suddenly on December 4th, 2023 at his home at the age of 74 years.
Gary will be lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara Hryciuk-Moar of Portage la Prairie, MB; children Doyle (Lori) Moar and Andrew (Cory) Moar; grandchildren Grace, Renee, Lauren and Ayla; siblings Myrt Kenny of Portage la Prairie, Archie Moar, Diane Moar and Fran Moar of Kinosota, and Lorna (Donnie) Asham of Kinosota; sisters-in-law Phyllis Moar, Wilma Moar, Donna (Rob) Rodericks, Patti (Ken Safruk) Hryciuk, and Shelley Bates; brother-in-law Don Pearson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Garry was predeceased by his parents Robert and Claudia Moar; siblings Angus Moar, Augusta Calder, Don Moar, Tena Dickson, John Moar, and Bessy Pearson; and in-laws Max and Arva Hryciuk.
Garry was born and raised on the family farm in Kinosota, MB. He was the youngest of 12 siblings in the Moar family. He grew up commercial fishing with his dad and his brothers on Lake Manitoba and farmed, raising cattle and other livestock. After graduation he continued to fish and farm until marrying Barb in 1976 in Alonsa, MB. They moved to Portage where he worked at CFB Southport until its closure in 1991, then continued to work for DND 17th Wing in Winnipeg until retirement. Along with working in Portage and Winnipeg, he continued to tend to the needs of the family farm with his brothers and sisters. Garry spent most of his recreational time curling in many bonspiels and tournaments, and playing senior hockey in the winter. In the summer months, when he was not on a tractor or in a field, he was playing third base for the Kinosota Cougars baseball club. He played for the Cougars for over 30 years. While spending his spare time at the farm, Garry loved to ride the trails out west, as well as hunting and fishing with his sons and his friends. Garry loved to travel with Barb and their friends. They had many winter vacations including Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, Hawaii, Florida and a trip of a lifetime to Egypt. He recently enjoyed family trips to Wisconsin Dells and Disney World. Garry continued his love for baseball while coaching his sons and playing in many father son baseball tournaments. He loved to watch his boys play sports, whether that was hockey in the winter or baseball in the summer, he never missed a game. Garry also never missed a road trip with his friends to Minneapolis to watch baseball. This annual tradition he continued with his family for years. One of Garry’s biggest hobbies was collecting sports cards. He had an extensive collection and he would always be stopping in at card shops to make deals, trade, or just talk about the card market. In the past few years, Garry spent most of his time watching his grandchildren play sports. He never missed a hockey, volleyball, softball or soccer game. Garry was his grandchildren’s biggest fan and supporter. The girls could always count on him to run them around, whether it was to school, practice or work. Garry would drop anything for them. That’s the type of person he was. He was quick witted, funny, caring, and humble. His priority was his family, and that never changed. His memory will live on through his wife of 47 years, his children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family and friends. He will be sadly missed.
A celebration of Garry’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6th, 2024 at McKenzie United Church in Portage la Prairie at 1:00 pm. Interment will be held at a later date.
Donations in Garry’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5.
