It's time to "know your zone" yet again as 300 pieces of snow-clearing equipment prepare to clear Winnipeg residential streets after this week's storm.

The City of Winnipeg says that a residential parking ban will be in effect Sunday, January 14 at 7 p.m. until Wednesday, January 17 at 7 a.m.

An earlier Alberta Clipper brought Winnipeg its first true taste of winter weather this season, and left between 10 and 20 cm of snow throughout much of the city. Outside the city several school divisions closed and highways closed as drifting snow piled high.

The City had already put in a temporary extended winter route parking ban, which remains in place until 7 a.m., Sunday, January 14. The full winter route parking ban comes into effect at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, however the City says in a press release that it will "suspend the winter route parking ban for the duration of the residential parking ban. This means drivers may park overnight on designated winter routes Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night. The City says that "Drivers must continue to adhere to any temporary or unrelated on-street signage that may prohibit parking on these routes. This includes things like no parking during rush hour and loading zones."

The winter route parking ban will resume at 2 a.m. on Thursday, January 18. This will once again prohibit parking on designated winter routes daily, from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.

The City of Winnipeg says that it will continue to suspend the winter route parking ban during residential parking bans, in an effort to "provide more parking options during residential plowing operations."

Additional information from the City of Winnipeg

Vehicles parked in violation of the residential parking ban may:

  • Receive a $200 ticket ($150 if paid early)
  • Be towed to a nearby street

We will use Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to identify vehicles parked illegally.

This technology helps us:

  • Enforce parking restrictions across more of the city
  • Improve compliance with restrictions
  • Improve our snow clearing service

ALPR tickets will be mailed rather than put on windshields. Enforcement officers will continue to hand-deliver tickets when necessary.

Anyone who believes their vehicle may have been towed should contact 311 for help locating it.

Reporting a missed street:

Residents should wait until the ban is lifted as crews may return at any point before the residential parking ban is lifted.

Residents can report a missed residential street after Wednesday, January 17 at 7 a.m. by:

Residents can request sanding using the sanding request form.

Additional information:

Approximately 300 pieces of heavy equipment will be used for this snow clearing operation. We remind people to drive to conditions and to use extreme caution when driving near heavy equipment.
