The U18 teams at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase took to the ice last night. The SJHL’s Team Blue, which includes Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings Forward Cade Meiklejohn, would take a 3-0 lead, and hold on for a 3-2 victory.
The SJHL took the lead with 7:39 to play in the first period, when Anthony McIntosh, who plays for the Yorkton Terriers, scored. Koen Senft, who skates with the Flin Flon Bombers, and Humboldt’s Ben Costantino had the assists on the goal.
In the second period, Carson Olsen from the Battlefords North Stars made it 2-0 2:21 into the frame, assisted by Melville’s Kole Keen and Nipawin’s Ronan Buckberger. Jacob Strizzi from the Broncos then made it 3-0 with a power play goal at 6:43. He was assisted on the goal by McIntosh and Costantino.
The MJHL would start to come back in the third when Elliot Perreault scored with 9:01 to go in the final period. Then, Bryce Bryant would pot one with 57 seconds to play, making it a 3-2 final.
Meiklejohn was held pointless in the game but did end up on the score sheet, as he was assessed a pair of minor penalties.
The other game of the day played in the late afternoon, saw the SJHL’s Team White beat Manitoba’s Team Black 4-3.
The SJHL/MJHL Showcase resumes today, with the SJHL’s Team Gold taking on the MJHL’s Team Black at 11:00 a.m. Then, Team White from Saskatchewan beat Manitoba’s Team Red at 2:00 p.m. The showcase wraps up with Team Blue taking on Team White at 5:00 p.m.
