Wings keep Hawks grounded in Nipawin

A goal in the first period would be all the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings needed Friday night, as Angelo Zol made 22 saves for his league-leading fourth shutout of the season to help the Red Wings to a 1-0 win over the Nipawin Hawks.

"The boys played fantastic," Zol said after the game. "It was a good bounce-back win. They were blocking shots, clearing bodies, and they made my job easy tonight."

Josh Karman had the lone goal for the Red Wings, scoring with 8:19 remaining in the first period. Ethan Dekay and Jaxson Ruthven assisted with his fourth of the year.

“We battled hard, and it came down to a couple of bounces that went their way,” said Weyburn forward Braigh LeGrandeur after the game. “It’s something to build on, and we can definitely learn from it.”

Red Wings skid extends to three games in La Ronge

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings went into Friday's game in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves looking to break out of a funk after dropping two games in a row. The Ice Wolves, though, would score three goals in the second period - two on the power play - to beat Weyburn 4-2.

"We've got to start competing harder," said forward Matty Edwards, who scored the first goal of the game for the Red Wings in the second period. "It starts from the puck drop, first period, so if we have a better first period I think we'll be just all right."

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings moved closer to clinching the Highway 39 Cup Friday night, as they topped the Estevan Bruins 3-2 in overtime. The win also pulled the Red Wings within four points of the Flin Flon Bombers for second overall in the SJHL.

"Honestly, it starts with our goaltending," said head coach Cody Mapes when asked after the game about how they were able to come away with two points. "I thought Ty (Matonovich) was unbelievable tonight. He made sure he gave us a chance."
