Despite scoring first, the Portage Terriers couldn’t fend off the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Tuesday night, falling 2-1.
The teams traded chances in the first period with Portage scoring first. Nolan Nenow went end to end to score a nice goal under the glove of Wolverine goalie Kaiden Kirkwood. The Terriers’ power play had opportunities to increase their lead but they couldn’t bury the puck. They finished the night 0/4 with the man advantage.
Waywayseecappo’s power play got them on the board in the second period. Ben Roulette snapped a shot past Gavin Renwick from the bottom of the circle. More penalties lead to more opportunities as the frame moved along but both goalies played well. The Wolverines were 1/5 on the power play. 1-1 after 2.
Midway through the third period former Terrier Thomas Kaufield passed it over to captain Sam McPeak on a two on one rush and he beat Renwick for the first Waywayseecappo lead of the night. Portage tried to mount a late comeback but they couldn’t score when needed. The Wolverines outshot Portage 30-28.
The Terriers are now off until Friday when they host the Selkirk Steelers.
