Terriers aim to start new streak in Niverville
The Portage Terriers face off with a division rival tonight after a split weekend against the Northern Manitoba Blizzard on the weekend.
Portage scored six goals and allowed six goals as well against the Blizzard, good enough to keep them in second place in the MGEU East Division.
Niverville currently sits in the fifth slot in the MGEU East Division, several points back of the division-leading Steinbach Pistons.
Terriers making up ground in the CJHL Power Rankings
The Portage Terriers continue to impress across the nation, with their second week in a row being ranked in the top 20 teams in the CJHL.
Portage was ranked 17 in the previous week, and they have now climbed 3 spots to move into 14, with minimal upheaval in front of them.
The Terriers have won 12 of their last 13 contests and take to the ice again on Wednesday evening to take on the Niverville Nighthawks.
Terriers take even weekend in Northern Manitoba
The Portage Terriers got back to their winning ways on Saturday night beating the Northern Manitoba Blizzard 3-2.
After starting slowly against the Blizzard on Friday, Portage came out much stronger in the first period. Cam Bullinger and Nolan Nenow caused a turnover in the corner and hit Scott Cousins in the slot with a pass. He made no mistake low blocker to open the scoring. The Blizzard would respond with Marlen Edwards coming out from the corner and beating Mitchell Kathler over his glove. 1-1 after 1.
Terriers stopped by Blizzard
The Portage Terriers’ 11-game win streak came to an end on Friday night when they lost 4-3 to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard.
The Terriers have struggled early in games throughout the season and Friday night was no different. Midway through the first period Keenan McNeill snapped home a shot over the shoulder of Terrier goalie Ryan Velan on the power play. 38 seconds later the Blizzard scored again with a Marlen Edwards point shot deflecting into the net.
Prince George to Portage: Mujcin and Cousins excited for where Terriers can go
Decker Mujcin has made the trip from Prince George, British Columbia to Portage la Prairie at least twice, as he joined the Terriers for his second year in the city. His buddy Scott Cousins made the trip to Portage for the first time, and the duo is enjoying getting a chance to play for a team leading the way in the league.
Cousins and Mujcin are childhood friends who met when Mujcin moved from Yellowknife to Prince George when he was around the age of ten. Mujcin shared what brought him back to Portage for another season.
Terriers tie team's longest win streak since 2016
Another game, another addition to the win streak for the Portage Terriers, as they have now gone on the MJHL's longest win streak this season. This time, the Dogs triumphed 5-2 over the visiting Winnipeg Blues. The win also propelled the Dogs to first place in the MJHL standings.
Both teams got some strange bounces in the first period, which got great reactions from the crowd.
With seconds left in the Terriers' first powerplay, Adler Johnston tried to send a pass to the front of the net, but with a bounce off of one of the Blues' sticks, ended up in the net.
Terriers aim to extend win streak as Winnipeg Blues visit Stride Place
The Portage Terriers are into rarified air with their current ten-game winning streak. The team hasn't won this many in a row since the 2022-2023 season when Kian Calder was the captain.
The Terriers put the win streak on the line against a team that hasn't beaten them at all in the last five seasons, the Winnipeg Blues. The Blues lost their last game on Monday to the Winkler Flyers 6-1, but managed their third win of the season the night previous, a 3-0 victory over the Winnipeg Freeze.
Two Terriers selected to try their hand against SJHL competition
Hockey players are no strangers to travel, and the Portage Terriers are no exception. The team is preparing for one of their big trips later this week, when they will take the six-hour drive to The Pas.
A couple Terriers also recently made the trip from Portage la Prairie to Warman, Saskatchewan to take part in the Western All-Star Showcase, put on by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
Thousands raised for two community groups
It was another successful year for the Portage Terriers and Central Plains Cancer Services as they teamed up once again for their annual sports dinner and auction.
It was the third year for the collaboration between the entities and 350 people packed into Canad Inns Friday night to not only show their support but to also hear NHL Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour tell a few stories.
Sharilyn Knox, executive director of Central Plains Cancer Services commented that it is an evening they really look forward to.
Ten wins in a row for the Portage Terriers
The Portage Terriers picked up their 10th win in a row on Monday night beating the Winnipeg Freeze 6-2.
The Freeze started off strong with Ben Whitford opening the scoring midway through the first period. Portage appeared to gain their footing after allowing the first goal. Scott Cousins tied the game with his second of the season and then Caleb Lepitre scored his first of the year on a delayed penalty. The Terriers outshot the Freeze 20-10 in the first period.
