In a likely preview of the first round of the playoffs, the Portage Terriers beat the Winkler Flyers 2-1 on Friday night.
A tight checking defensive battle saw momentum swing back and forth throughout the game. Portage got some great scoring chances early in the first and then finally broke the deadlock. Parker Scherr scored on a point shot ten seconds into the first Terrier power play of the night. Winkler responded a few minutes later when the MJHL’s leading scorer, Dalton Andrew, blasted home a power play goal past Gavin Renwick. 1-1 after 1.
The second period was tightly contested with both teams playing physical. Aidan Brook dropped the gloves with former Terrier Brandt Young and they were both done for the night. The game remained tied at one after 2.
Midway through the third period Adler Johnston snapped home a nice shot under the bar to give the Terriers their second lead of the night. The Flyers would charge hard down the stretch but couldn’t tie the game. Both goalies played great with Winkler outshooting Portage 33-30. With the win Portage took the season series 4-1.
