There is currently no change in Cochrane town council's decision to let the province dictate the appropriate response to COVID-19.

Nor is there any immediate plan to follow Banff's lead of making vaccines mandatory for town staff.

"We always have our eye on the COVID numbers and everything to do with COVID we monitor very closely," says Mayor Jeff Genung. "We are not at this point mandating the vaccination of employees."

"Those things could change at any time, but we're really just taking the lead from the province at this point."

He says no special meetings have been called to discuss the rising number of active COVID cases in the community, and that the town council isn't scheduled to meet until Sept. 13.

In mid-April, town council decided not to extend its face mask bylaw beyond May 1 by a close 4-3 vote.

"We wade into it last time because there was avoid left by the province in our thoughts, but at this point, we think the province needs to take the lead and we'll follow AHS and everything that they've been saying about COVID."

Banff acting town manager Darren Enns said the mountain reached the decision to ensure the safety of employees and the community. He says the majority of the town staff is already fully immunized.

As of yesterday, Banff had the highest per capita number of active cases of COVID.
