At 5:57 p.m., on Tuesday June 11, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Central Alberta including Red Deer, Ponoka, and Lacombe areas.

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Lacombe Co. near Clive Alix and Mirror
  • Red Deer Co. near Elnora Lousana and Delburne
  • Red Deer Co. near Penhold Innisfail and Bowden
  • Camrose Co. near Bashaw and Meeting Creek
  • Ponoka Co. near Ponoka and Maskwacis
  • Co. of Stettler near Stettler Nevis and Rochon Sands
  • Red Deer Co. near Pine Lake
  • Co. of Stettler near Byemoor and Endiang
  • Lacombe Co. near Lacombe Blackfalds and Bentley
  • Co. of Stettler near Donalda
  • City of Red Deer
  • Co. of Stettler near Big Valley
  • Co. of Stettler near Botha and Gadsby

At 5:56 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

This line of storms is located from north of Edmonton to Calgary and is moving 50 km/h to the east. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler.

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail.

Severe thunderstorms are expected early this evening. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
