Emergency department renovations have started at the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre.
Due to construction, the emergency department will be temporarily relocated to a space on the hospital’s main floor on June 18.
Patients will continue to have access to emergency care throughout this time. Starting June 18, anyone coming to the emergency department for care is asked to enter through the hospital's main entrance. A temporary waiting area for emergency patients will be in the main foyer area.
Upgrades to the emergency department include a complete redesign and renovation to enhance patient and staff experience and safety. Renovations will include additional treatment spaces, a new waiting room, and washrooms accessible to everyone.
Renovations are expected to be completed next year.
Approximately $13 million is being spent on upgrades and renovations, with the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation contributing $1.7 million to purchase equipment.
Due to construction, traffic flow through the roundabout in front of the hospital will be divided into two lanes, one for ambulances and emergency vehicles, and the other for patient drop-offs.
The public is asked to watch for signs and lane dividers in the area and to help keep the roundabout clear. Public parking will remain available in the lot to the north of the main doors.
