A Glendale Sciences and Technology School teacher has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Lindsay Unland, the Science and Technology Lead Teacher was awarded a certificate of achievement for the work she does to make science and technology engaging and fun for all students.

When Unland found out she had been nominated by her colleagues, she was honoured.

“Reading what my colleagues said and wrote about me was incredibly touching and filled me with so much gratitude and appreciation,” she said. “When I found out I was receiving the award, I was blown away.”

In her role, Unland coordinates the school's science and technology activities for kindergarten to Grade 8 students.

She explained that the teachers have scheduled collaborative time to discuss and explore the curriculum and brainstorm different activities and lessons for students.

“The implementation of the new science curriculum has given us a fresh slate to explore creative ways to teach the content. I take those brainstormed ideas and help develop hands-on, engaging activities for students,” Unland said. “I enjoy working with our Grades 6, 7, and 8 students through teaching our STEM-related option courses to highlight STEM content and build capacity in students."

Unland began teaching in 2007 and has spent two years at the Glendale Sciences and Technology School.

“I have always loved science and knew I wanted to pursue something related to it. When I was deciding on my university path, I chose a combined science and education degree program,” she said. “I enjoyed working with youth, and through that program and my practicum, I discovered my love of teaching a subject I am passionate about.”

Unland added that being able to share her passion for STEM with her students has been a wonderful experience.

“I believe learning science should be experienced, hands-on, and interactive. Having the opportunity to play a role in bringing that vision to life in our school has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding,” she said.

Sandre Bevan, Principal at Glendale Sciences and Technology School, said Unland has completely transformed how the school teaches STEM.

“Thanks to her leadership, STEM is now a vital part of our educational approach, not just a label,” Bevan said. “Students have developed a newfound passion for science under her guidance. Lindsay's remarkable impact on STEM education at Glendale truly makes her deserving of the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence.”
