It’s Operation Safe Driver Week July 7 through July 13, and you’ll see an increase in members of the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, RCMP, and municipal police.

The campaign is observed annually according to Mathew Austin, commercial vehicle enforcement specialist with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol. “It’s coordinated by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).”

“It’s acknowledged by law enforcement agencies across North America. This isn’t just a Saskatchewan operation – this is North America-wide, all week long,” added Austin.

He said that this week will see an increase in traffic stops in the province, with over 30 officers taking part. “Officers are going to be on the lookout for reckless, dangerous drivers, as well as having a focus on speeding, distracted or aggressive driving, failure to wear seatbelts, and watching for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs.”

Both commercial and passenger vehicles will be stopped as part of the campaign, with the aim of creating safer roads and preventing injuries or deaths through improved driving behaviours.
