Coming up this Friday, July 19th is the 5th annual Ringsteken event in Downtown Ponoka.

Annie Muilwijk from the Alberta Friesian Horse Association explains what a Ringsteken is:

"It's an old traditional event from the Netherlands.  The Ringsteken event is you have people that have a handheld device and try to. catch the rings that are put alongside the road on a post. You get four of these so you get four chances in one run and then the people have four times a run. Points are calculated as every ring is a point and then second round two points and so on."

Muilwijk says there are 25 people participating in this year's event with approximately 20 hitch horses and five to seven people riding a horse.

The event which runs from 5:30 to 8:30 will also have food vendors, and free kids tattooing.

There will be temporary road closures in Downtown Ponoka on Friday, July 19 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• 51 Avenue (from 50 Street to 51 Street) the event area; and

• 50 Avenue (from 50 Street to 51 Street) the event staging area.

The horses will be ridden or driven to the event at 5:30 p.m. from the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 - 54 Street) to Downtown Ponoka. The riders and horses will return to the Ponoka Arena Complex around 8:30 p.m. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in these areas and watch for horses and pedestrians.
