A newly recruited general surgeon is now working full-time out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and City View Surgical Associates Clinic.

Dr. Emily Mitic has been practising in Red Deer as a locum covering a maternity leave since January and is now a permanent member of the team as of July 8. Dr. Mitic grew up in southern Alberta and received her medical degree from the University of Alberta in 2015. She later completed her general surgery residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Sudbury, Ont., in 2021.

“On behalf of the Government of Alberta and residents of Red Deer and area, I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Dr. Mitic,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Her skill and expertise will improve local access to healthcare services for central Alberta residents.”

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

Prior to arriving in Red Deer, Dr. Mitic was in surgical practice in Timmins, Ont., for two years, and has done short-term locums in various locations in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta.

Dr. Mitic has returned to Alberta to be closer to family. She credits the year spent in an integrated community clerkship in Sylvan Lake, which included a significant amount of time working at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, for her decision to practice here.

“The ICC program was an invaluable educational opportunity for me, and I have many fond memories or working at Red Deer hospital as a medical student,” says Dr. Mitic.
